We Were Soldiers-Dirt Hits

Post by Almondo99 »

While watching the Special Features of We Were Soldiers I saw what looked like a board, and several dirt hits came out of it, In a row like a machinegun burst. Anyone know how to make one of these?

A bunch of tubes and a CO2 pump.

Or squibs.

It should be simple enough to do. . . tubes beneath the surface hooked to a compressed air source of some kind, like maj barnes said, or squibs beneath the surface and wired so you can fire them in sequence.

Run a tube connected to an air compressor underneath, poke holes in the tube every foot or so...however far apart away you want the hits to be.
I thought they looked great in the movie by the way.

The only problem with that is when you set off the compresser, all will go off at once.

So it would be best it you had each hole with an individual tube, you might need to find an adaptor for the hose from the pump (which I doubt they have a six or eight tube adaptor), and for each adaptor its own valve, and have the tube filled with the compressed air the let go on the valve on each to give a machine gun effect.

But this sounds like a cr** load of work!

How should I detonate the squibs? Can I do it with a roll of caps?

The cheapest way is to hook the wires up to a 9volt, keep one wire connected at all times, then when ready just put the other wire on the other diode and bam, or you can use the switch board. But squibs are a little dangerous.

And if you do a roll of caps you'd have to get pretty imaginative with setting them off, I wouldn't know how to, but it's always worth a try.

Could I just set them on fire with a fuse or something?

Yes, technically speaking you can, but it's much more precise and effective to just wire them into a switchboard.

Try using what they use for launching kit rockets, They come with all of the equipment. You can get it at any hobby store.

If you did use the CO2 you would need a long tube or whatever (and LOTS of CO2). If you own a Paintball gun then it would be alot eaiser (which i have and thank you for giving me that idea for my WWII movie). But squibs (condoms) come 4 in a box... so you would have to buy alot. But im glad i read this topic
Let god have mercy on my enemies... for i will not...

NP, and I don't have a paintball gun. I might try to get one, for movie and game purposes.

Many air compressers feature multiple outlets (mine features two). You could, if you so desire, fashion an adapter to be affixed to the outlet which could split the flow into multiple tubes. If you're really bored, you could place regulators in each tube and set off shots in sequence.

Usually, when the bigger the tank, the price goes up drastically. It doesn't need a LOT of pressure to puff some dust off the ground.

Lucky for me, my uncle owns an Air compressor company!
