Yeah I agree with you there. I'm currently searching for better car paint tutorials. As for the lighting, I'm happy with the way the vehicle is lit with the exception of the shadow on the underside of the vehicle but I'm gonna try rendering the scene with Mental Ray and see what kind of results I get.

And the fog is supposed to be dust but as you can tell that needs more work lol.

car paint is just reflective metal...

low diffuse with color
slight amount of specular
some reflection

How does this look:

Don't pay attention to the shadowing. This was just a quick render.

looks pretty good for in a white room, but the true test of a texture like that is when you set up the reflection maps.

Here is a scene with the General Lee composited in with better reflections.

It's too sharp looking, and it's very flat looking.

I agree it doesnt suite the scene. It looks like a 'cars' car trying to fit in with real cars.

Hey that looks great. What did you do? Add some type of atmospherics to it or something?

photoshopped it a tiny bit very fast and saved it as a low quality jpg to match the low quality of the source image. it was really quick just to illustrate that after you render you still need to retouch. but the material looks convincing.

Ah I see. Yeah it looks great. I'm trying to duplicate that because the shot is actually nodal pan shot which I tracked in Boujou. But hey man, thanks for your help and tips. :D

my tip is take it to after effects and degrade it. a computer renders way too crisp. theres even filters to match the grain in your footage and color adjust shadows to your white balance.. all your tricks come with time.

Oh ok. Do you think that the car is reflecting too much or should I tone it down just a little bit?
