RE: Rag-Doll!
make a 3d double if you have 3ds Studio. the next best way would be to break it down into multiple shots and thow an actual ragdoll. you could also do it in front of a greenscreen and use motion in premiere to make him fly farther. look on videocopilot.com and look at the serious compositing for AE DVD. the most expensive way would be to actually buy a zip harness and pull him back with a rope. but if you do that do lots of research on it. if you do it wrong you could seriously get hurt
RE: Rag-Doll!
You can make a zip harness real cheap, I think, can't remember the site though... Or you could put him on a green stool infront of a greenscreen and move the camera away, blowing a fan on his hair and making him flailing, then composite onto where you want him and make the explosion and smoke hide anything that looks dodgy...

That's gotta be some grenade...
Look at the scene and decide what you want for an end result. There are several ways to tackle this problem. Harness and wires are always fun, if the proper precautions are taken. Color screens are diffuclt to pull off unless you have the proper equipment. If you decide to go with a color screen, I would shoot it outside. Possibly even at the same location. This will help match your lighting better, but only if you can ensure few shadows hit the screen itself.
We always just jump backwards ourselves. If the camera is static, you can toy with the framerate and make the character accelerate faster!
