Frame mode or normal mode?

Post by youngfilmmaker »

Here's another question. I noticed that my GL2 has a frame mode setting, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to film with that, or should I just use the normal mode?

frame mode is a kind of simulated version of progressive frame modes found on cameras like the DVX100b, or Canon XL2.

I suggest you try it out to see if its 'simulation' of progressive frame modes is any good. What you will notice, is a kind of slight stucatto effect (forgive my typo)
that is supposed to simulate the 'moving motion' of film.

Without the real benefits of progressive frame modes its a little redundant to be honest, but experiment with it anyway (particuarly with shots of moving subjects, and pans etc.)

Yeah give it a go. I prefer deinterlacing afterwards. You get more control if you do everything afterwards.

nigel your talking about aspect ratio, 4:3 being your old fashioned TV, and 16:9 being your widescreen TV. This is not the 'frame mode' function being asked about by youngfilmaker.

I think i just thought thats what you were meaning when you said you 'de-interlace afterwards' which i thought u might have meant was somethign u did with footage recorded in progressive. Naturally you should de-interlace (in fact you should only) once the footage is edited and ready in a finalised state for recording onto dvd or broadcast etc.

Anyway Ornsack i know you wouldn't be daft enuf to de-interlace progressive footage! hehe btw if you don't mind me asking what camera and mode do u record urself with?

Ah no no!

I use a sony handycam. You can do frame mode on it but I never use it.

Plus, I always deinterlace and grade all my footage in Sony Vegas before editing. I like to get all the rendering out of the way so I see a finished product as I edit. It's not always an ideal way to work, but it's nice when you shove in that final shot and you can watch it back in glorious graded deinterlace-ness

Well the DVX100b is an amazing standard def progressive camera, with cine gamma settings that combine to give material the look and 'motion' of film. - Its thee most popular indy video camera of all time, definately worth checking out, as its the most affordable way to film progressive with brilliant in menu grading (in effect.) I should add, that its technology is a good deal more sophisticated than a simple post edit prog too.

So if you get pocket money saved up you can grab those guys in the UK for 1700 (ex demo or something.)

I nearly cried when I spent £30 on a DVD writer earlier! (mine always break for some reason) And I've never seen them go for so cheap before Can't really afford a new camera for a while :(

Glad to see the Darkplace love is spreading!

DARKPLACE!!! I saw that at 1 A.M. for the first time 2 weeks ago, not knowing anything about it. I saw the intro with the guy holding a baby and jumping to safety then knowing it was fake, it was when everyone turned into a monkey. Every time I watch it I can't put it in my head that it wasn't made in the 80's, but 2 years ago.

There's American people on a Darkplace forum I frequent that can't get it in to their heads that it isn't real, it's a bit crazy!

I know it was made 2 years ago but sometimes I might just forget, due to it looking like it wasn't.

The keyboarded intro is the best, especially the part when he lands from the explosion jump.
