gelatine molds

Post by dmosher »

Has anyone ever tried using gelatine as a quick and dirty mold. Any idea if it would hold a cast for a quick body part mold or something similar?

Gelatines way too flimsy, it would never work.

it depends of the consistency; if you prepare it in a 50/50 mixture, it might work if the object is small and if you cast it in a short amount of times(minutes). however, plaster and ultracal generate heat as they set, so that could melt the gelatin if used for the cast.

if you use a material like resin for the cast, however, it could work.

but don't forget to build a mother mold, so that the gelatin can't warp.

Don't use ANY plaster molds for gelatine, The water that basically makes the gelatine absorbs into the plaster and all you get is powdered gelatine.

that's true when you don't coat the mold with mold release. but why you would cast ANYTHING from a plaster mold without mold release is beyond me. a thin layer of vaselin is all you need; the oil in it seals the plaster so no water from the gelatin gets absorbed.

and btw, the topic is not about casting gelatin in a plaster mold, but using gelatin as a mold ;)

But thanks for the clarification Bloody! yes I am asking about making the actual mold out of gelatine. I want to try a leg or face mold and am wondering if it will work and if it will be flexible to get my foot out, and what to pour into if I do.

oh, life casting? then it might be a problem... in a one piece mold, it'll probably tear, and gelatin liquid enough to make the mold will be scolding hot, near boiling point. unless you want to burn yourself, pay a few bucks more and buy alginate.
