RE: Chainsaw
buy a used chainsaw, you should find one for about 20-30$. and if it works, take of the chain, and you'll be able to start it without risking injuring anyone!

Wouldnt get the same noiserhys wrote:Or pull out the motor if thats possible.
You can also paint and cut the sheath thing to look like the blade, they do that at Halloween Nights in Universal and Islands of Adventure. Creepy as hell, but very realistic.bloodymess wrote:buy a used chainsaw, you should find one for about 20-30$. and if it works, take of the chain, and you'll be able to start it without risking injuring anyone!

Wouldn't get the same noise? Sound effects!
If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed.

and it's trouble for nothing, it's easier to pull out the chain than to take out the motor and finding sound effects and syncing them correctly!

you cant really see the chain that much anyway especially on film. I've done shots with the chain off for wide shots, than switch to the chain on to show the blood flying for a closeup. (stuck the thing in a bucket full of blood). But in the actual edit when the chain is moving you cant even see the damn thing.
I'd say pull the chain off and leave the engine in, the sound is good and synching is not a problem.
Also another little tip, if you want the saw to show a lil more smoke coming out of the exhuast add more oil to its fuel mixture. It'll burn dirtier and spew more smoke for a nice effect.
You can get saws for fairly cheap (garage sales or otherwise) just hit up craigslist and look for ads or post a wanted ad.

I'll have to look
Somewhere I have an article form an engineering magazine from years ago, it shows how to use a bike chain so it still turns but has no blades. I also have seen situations where they use a dremmel or heavy file, remove the chain and round off the blades/points on the chain. Yes it could possibly still cause a mild injusry but is much much safer than a live saw.
