You can always just hang out the car window, or set up a tripod on the back of a pickup.

I tried it! The effect was quite good as well. The only problem is that around here, the roads are so bad, and I've got soft suspension that's really smooth, but bounces a few times. The overall shot kept moving up and down. If I could correct this problem in post production by fixing the horizon, then it would have come out great.

There's several ways you can build a mount:

- Clamp it to the door, through an open window

- Bolt it to the bumper (Great for those really low-down cruising shots)

- You can get windscreen-stick-on fixing kits for remote digital lenses - These can shake if you're suspension is too hard.

I'll be building a new one soon (The last one was made from wood, the new one will be welded steel), so when I get back from Holiday towards the end of September, I'll post the details, and some sample footage.

By the way, what do you lot recommend for post-production editing to stabalise the horizon?

These guys do reasonably inexpensive vehicle mounts, as well as all sorts of other grips, jibs, etc.:

B Hague

They're in the UK though, so not sure how much it would cost to deliver to the US.

I have made a DIY car mount for my camcorder.

Use the search facility and search for "car mount". You should find an old thread I started called "Car Mounted Camera Shots"

I was quite pleased with the results :)
