Jumping Off REALLY Tall Building

Post by Headless_Duck_Productions »

Does anyone know how to make it look like somone is jumping off a really tall building? Like in MI3? I know how THEY did it but I was wondering if there were any other REALLY low budget ways of doing this and getting a pretty good effect.

get a 6ft bluescreen and get him to swim in the air- then loop the background, only way i can think

have a picture of the building wizzing past so fast you cant see the person, a blur then have him landing

you could bluescreen ur actor on it, or shoot from a wide angle and animate a shot of him falling down...
Or if you had a very enthusiastic (and slightly retarded) actor, you could get him to jump...or just push him.

instead of a cliff use the building...

then cut to above view and effectively do what ctbullet says, have a man "swimming" in the air, with use of fans etc, and then either CGI the building or throw your camera off to get the falling footage.

You could do the blade style of jumping off a building, you have a 3d stunt double jump off the building, the cut to a shot of the actor on greenscreen with a fan blowing hard on them, then composite onto a shot of the background panning down, then a final shot of the person land on the ground.

ok heres some thaughts... blue screen would have to be used because either way you would need the shot of the actor jumping off something.

Id think shooting a still shot using blue/green screen on the floor and in front of the camera. Film the actor run forward ON THE SPOT and jump off the building. Then you could dolly shot forward on the building and align the two in a composite. So why does he jog on the spot before jumping forward? Because the dolly shot of the building will move with him giving a really cool chase cam effect.

Then you could cut to a cg double. If the shot if far away enough it can look really convincing. I've had experience in using Endorphin which could work really well at something like this.

I think shooting cinematic style and using 3d animation shots as real cameras and cinematic shots will add to the realism. You could make a 3d building and use a backplate and fake the perspective for something crazy which could easily be done in AE.

But just go for a long shot jumping off the building and heres a note... Don't cut to the actor close up falling to the ground and landing... its so lame. Id animate the 3d guy to land really naturally in an awesome position and cut to the dude face to the ground then looks up.

New idea, try a dummy. Film your actor running towards the edge of the building then place something infront of the camera at a certain point in the run, when the actor gets to this point switch him for the dummy that will be thrown off the edge. This could be done nicely if done in an overhead shot so that 1. it will look cooler since you can actually see the height of the building and two it would look more fluid from the the top, the guy just runs and jumps all in supposedly one shot. Then you can cut to a shot of the dummy falling again down the side of the building. (carefully placed weights in the dummy would give it some bodylike movements as it catapults to the ground. the arms would wave around and what not.) then find a similar looking building but that has a balcony or some place you can stand, use this to tie a rope to a harness on your actor and hang him above the ground at the highest possible altitude that your actor knows he can land from and not hurt himself. from there just use a low angle shot (or whichever if ya got the wire removal software) and drop him to the ground.
