Saving Private Ryan had a lot of digitally included flashes because most extras held dummy rifles. But at those distance, nobody would see casing anyway. If you are going to invest that much in a film... get real rifles. Learn them. Make it worthwhile. There are some really nice looking airsoft M1s out there. I've played with them... make sure they have the wood stocks. But those are just as much as real rifles...

Electric guns
I use this site to get my guns for my movies. They have some good electric guns that does the movement of a real gun when you pull the trigger. but I add the fire on the tip of the gun with my computer.
