Nerf Mavericks, Cool design for sci fi guns.

Post by Hinchu »

This is kind of interesting, here in the states lots of nerds are going crazy over modding out Nerf Mavericks. I think these could make some crazy-a** sci fi weapons. They are also cheap at 8 dollars a pop.

That's me holding 2 of the guns.

So I tore one of them apart (got to keep one to play with).

Lots of little parts

And then sprayed down a primer.

I sprayed a light coating of a metallic texture spray paint. I then used some silver model paint to simulate a scratched up gun, just painting mainly on the edges, and wear there would be normal wear and tear, as well as painting in the screws.

And finally here is the finished product.

I'm pretty sure you could combine several of these guns together in creative ways to invent your own sci fi weapons. Just saw and glue them together.

wow that looks absolutely amazing. What kind of paint did you use and how many layers of it? Because I thought spray paint rubs off onto your hand... so wouldn't it smear?

I used 2 coats of black spray paint primer on it. I sprayed on a light coating of the Rustoleum black metallic. After it dried I just used silver model paint to paint on all of the stress on the black parts, and the silver parts. I'm sure if I handle it a lot the paint won't hold up, it was pretty sticky when I first finished it, but now that it has been a day it is less sticky. I hear people are having better results using a vinyl die, which you can get in a spray can from like an auto store. It would be interesting to try that.

A couple of coats of matte varnish would finish this off nicely. Well done.

Matte varnish would protect it from wear and tear wouldn't it? I'm guessing you can choose the glossiness of it. Does it affect the overall look of it much? Do you know if it would make it less sticky? It's been a day now and it's still a bit sticky.

I have to seriously refrain from shooting my housemate's little dogs. It's seriously hard. The only thing stopping me is to find the right time to do it, when she isn't around! *evil grin*

I kind of want to try taking a few guns, hackin' em up with saws, and seeing how I can put them back together for awesomeness.

These are good for things other than Scifi, I used one of these to make a mock up auto shotgun (Modded the hell out of it. I'll see if I can't dig up a picture, we destroyed it in the scene it was used in)

that's cool. In Tasmania (the shithole of Australia) we have a shop caled Chickenfeed who sell cheap stuff.
They sell heaps of plastic piustols and guns, they're my main prop supplier! 2 Dollars for everything...
