How would I go about making a gun that shoots lasers?
I was thinking that I would need to rotoscope but is there a better way to do it?

Consider location also here. A murky or dusty atmosphere to easily show up the laser shot.

Rotoscoping a traditional laser is not too bad really. You only need to see the shot for a frame or two, then it usually goes out of frame or hits it's target.
Not nearly as tedious as rotoscoping a lightsaber fight
Have fun.

Doing a lazer shot would be a pretty easy thing to do in Paint Shop Pro's Animation Shop (comes with PSP, which is avaliable on several cover disks).
Don't use it to do Lightsabers though! Drawing them frame by frame really is horrible (I thought it'd be the easiest way of doing it, I was wrong...).

Lol! When I was about 13 we were making a Sci-Fi film, and we created lazer shots by getting lazer pointers (which we got in Spain 'cus it was during all that bad publicity they were getting over here and shops stopped selling them) and spraying deodrant across the lazer and speeding it up.

Exactly, atmosphere and creativity wins everytime!
Laser pens also make great red dot laser sites for pistols ina flim. Easy to rig up and cheap.

Yeah the first time someone ever pointed one of those things at me was during a school play, and I thought an audience member was about to shoot me

Shine it infront of your cat on the ground.
You will be amazed at how the cat goes crazy trying to catch it.

Yeah we spent a-many-an-hour doing that! Especially one of our cats... She wouldn't leave it alone. The best thing to do is spin it round in a circle for ages, then move it in a straight line. The symptoms of dizziness will clearly show!
