Bullet hits

Post by ct_bullet »

i'm sure this has been brought up many times, but do you think firing an air rifle at a wall sprinkled with flour is a good idea

i have been using party poppers for body hits atm

but when it comes to ground hits the party popper ethod just doesn't seem to work, i've also tried the whole kicking up dirt for an explosion idea, it always seems too small for an artillery hit in my case

anyway does anyone else have any ideas for bullet hits (as i want the shots close to my actors, i am a good shot, but when on camera, i don't think i can rely on anyone??

also i stuggle with mulitple shots, bluescreened bullet shots are too noticeable, also if i do a camera motion when filming, and place the bullet hit in, the cloud moves with the camera and looks gay, i supose this can be avoided, but when the actor is running its a bit boring for the camera to be stationary- sorry if i've waffled on a bit

Cherry bombs, but they're a bit unpredictable. Our you could hook them up to a 9volt like squib.

Paintball gun. Shoot it near the actor/actors. Works especially well if your running thru leaves/foliage. Be very careful about where you shoot. Do not hit your actors : )

I came up with an idea:
Buy those large macaronis and stuff them with flour, put aluminum foil or something in the holes at the sides, then shoot it at the wall with a slingshot. The bigger macaroni the better.

it is. pasta is the name for all sorts of pasta... ehrm. pasta can be spaghetti, macaroni, tagliatelle, gnocci, tricolore etc etc.

This is macaroni. they are too small, so try to find these:

They are called Pipe rigate, and are a larger form of macaroni!

This idea makes no sense. Try getting a test video up or something.

Looks good, you could easily edit it so you can't see the macaroni flying, good job, thanks for sharing this with us.

I have been using a slingshot method similar for a while, instead of pasta though I use tinfoil balls dipped in mud and left to dry. When the ball hits something the dry the mud explodes in a cloud of dust, and the tinfoil flattens and drop away, even if the camera does pick it up, its metallic, so you can always say it was the bullet itself!

I had an idea for a bullet hitting glass. If you've ever seen Red-Eye a bullet hits the front windshield. It puts a slight hole into it but mostly sends small glass flecks into the air, so small it almost looks like dust.

My idea: Get a peice of clear masking tape, a piece of (smaller than masking tape) plastic wrap. You place the plastic wrap on the sticky side of the tape, place a tiny bit of flour onto the plastic wrap. You tape it to the windshield and apply a fishing line to the tape, that way, somebody in the passanger seat can pull the string hard enough to open the tape and let the flour fly.

I did a couple of tests of this but had to do it without fishing line and the car wasn't moving, it didnt' work becuase it's mandatory that the car is moving to give it enough air to spray the flour. I'll probably do it some other time when I have somebody to help me. If anybody wants to try it out, go ahead, just film it.

Also from even 5 feet away I couldn't even see the tape on the windshield, just the glob of flour.

I take a small copper pipe, 3 inches long maybe and I put a spring inside. Then, nail a nail in the bottom to hold it in place. Nail in another nail in the middle and make sure it's loose, so the nail will come out easily. Then tape the top part of the spring, pull it back, stick in the nail, put in flour and sand, tie string to the nail, tape the pipe to something, and pull. I really like that macaroni method, it looks really good on hard surfaces.
