underwater model shots!

Post by Jasonrocks »

HI, i need a hand here. I need a scene involving a shot of a sub in the sea and I need an under water shot. I've got the model and all ready, but how do i film under water, and what should I do for the water tank to hold the model sub in? Does anyone know how? Ta.

Watch the behind the scenes of Hunt For The Red October. You actually don't need water.

Well, with the proper lighting, you can make a blue backdrop look like under water.

id put the lens of the cam right next to the bottom of a tupperware container>point the container in the bottom of a pool> have a model sub that sinks but use fishing string for the front and back of it (im not saying to put the tupperware underwater, but at least 2 inches so the cam will work.

That's just that though, the bottom of a pool would look like the bottom of a pool. You need some sort of blue back drop to look like lots of water.

ya but usually underwater shots are fuzzy or(a little out of focus) if you have a dark blue pool bottom (some people have) then itll look ok.

I'd skip using water entirely like Gyro mentioned. Get a dark, dark blue backdrop, fill up the room you're in with either smoke or one of those fog machines (careful with breathing, of course. . .make sure you have air and so on), then light appropriately and just have the model in there. I believe that's the technique they used for the underwater Gungan city in Episode I.

heres what you should do.
get a fishtank, fill it with water, put the submarine inside it, and put like a dark piece of paper behind it...

a few other effects for it:
put a few drops of blue food coloring, and let it swish around naturally.
make the water look mucky and add some dirt to it.
shine a few flashlight at different angles from the top.
light insense and put that in front of the glass making the cameras view look foggy.

i think i might try and film this later to show what i mean.....

If you feel adventageous, you can make a waterproof box for your camera.
