Bullet Hits!

Post by xander-prd »

Okay, so we were testing out our bullet hits today. The movies have a black bit at the beginning for a few seconds sometimes. What do you think?

Those are good, except you need blood. Now tell us how you did those :0

Those look awsome. Reminds me of SPR for some reason. Im guessing you used some kind of powder?

Basically, I emptied out a party popper and put different amounts of talcon powder in (more for ground shots, less for bullet hits)

then gaffer tape to the body, extended the string with a shoestring or nylon string (depending on the length needed) and pull!

I have been out and made some more so i'll post them soon, and explain what I did in each to clarify.

=JDL= - SPR?

DEDFX - blood is an issue at the moment, im not sure how to include it that wont ruin the puff but will be visible, any ideas?

SPR = Saving Private Ryan

I love 'em! Don't worry about the blood, body hits from the front are nothing but dust from the clothes and smoke from burning flesh and fabric, you don't see blood in an entrance wound unless you're extremly close. (Yes, I know this doesn't always hold true, arteries and such, but it is my belief that squibs sould only use blood for the exit wound.) Could you post a pic of one of the party poppers, I'm probably thinking of something else, it's not a plastic gun that shoots out streamers or confetti right? 'Cause thats the only party popper I've ever seen.

EDIT: Also, for the ground and tree hits, try using very finely ground up dirt ( as close to the texture of talcum powder as you can get), or cocoa powder works too. The brown looks more like dirt (or bark) than the white powder

Thanks :D,

Actually I can post a pic as I had to take some for an art project, I'll show you what I used and where we put them too, when i put the next videos up.

And yeah, i actually got the idea from Saving Private Ryan and war films.

A party popper isn't really a gun, its like a little container (it has streamers and confetti in though, and you pull a string and the confetti comes out because of a small explosive i think it is inside.

Yeah, this seems to be the only thing I can find, obviously won't work. I never knew these had that kind of power.

they dont, you have to take them apart, and put them back together with talcon powder in.

Okay, my mate edited them together. . .so i cant show you each individual clip and explain but here's the rundown:

Shot 1, Activated from extended string out (well not so out) of shot

Shot 2, a long piece of nylon string held by the guy with the gun, attached to the popper on my shirt

Shot 3, "Trip Wire" across the log, when I ran past the log I pulled on the wire which set off the popper

Shot 4, Indy pulled the tag

Shot 5, Offscreen pulled on extended line

Shot 6, Pulled by me (getting shot) reaction to gun

Shot 7, Same as 6 times 2

Shot 8, Affixed to tree, extended off screen and set off

Shot 9, Set off by Ed on himself

Its ~5.6mb so it may take a while but theyre all on there. . . hope you enjoy:

Sexy, seems you've got the method down pat. I know you've got to take out the streamers and whatnot, I was just saying the stock pyrotechnic in something kids can buy is pretty powerful. I realy did mean power, I didn't mispell "powder"! :D

ohhh lol, sorry i read it as powder lol.

I must admit i was surprised at the amount of power when i first did it - but even though they are powerful, they dont hurt. I taped some to my skin and exploded them straight onto my hand in an attempt to get another actor to wear one for our final shoot.

Heres one rigged to a tree. We used silver gaffer tap to fix them in place then extended the string with blue nylon rope as its bearly visible on film. . . we're upgrading to 2lb fishing wire soon though:

Ive got another few coming including one rigged to a shirt and the equipment we use.

and finally:

Its been taped to Ed and Luke is extending the string so when its pulled it looks a bit more like a natural stance.

I think compressed air looks better, but these are easier to hide.

don't want to be too negative, but i really wasnt impressed. slimdogs tests were a lot better. for one thing, there was too much talcum powder in yours, and it stayed in the air way too long. if youre going to use this method, at least put in less powder.

very clever idea though, and good timing on the tests.

oh and I cant make them like slimdog as I cant get my hands on firecrackers and most of the cast members just wouldnt wear one. One is even dubious about strapping one of them^^ to their leg.

well u can either use the same colour tape as the shirt, ot hide it under a jacket or something.

For one of them i taped it to the inside of my jacket to get a centre of the chest shot.

You can also put it in your breast pocket if you can run the string through a small hole or something.

Be creative, think outside the box lol - you'll think of something
