Windows Media 9 Encoder -- WOW!

Post by padawanNick »

OK, I've been a big fan of DIVx and On2's VP3, but now...

Yesterday, I installed Microsoft's new Media 9 encoder and WOW, this thing is just amazing. I really can't believe that it's free.
It's 2-pass VBR encoder compressed the few video files I tried down to less than 1% of their original size and I honestly could see hardly any difference in image quality. I was just floored by the quality.

I'd be surprised if this ever becomes any kind of universal standard. I don't think it can be played on Macs or Linux at this point, but I know that I'm planning on adding a Media 9 version of any future videos added to my site.

You can find out more here if you're interested in taking advantage of it for your own work.
I'd be interested to here what the results look like in other environments.

Have fun.

Not me!

No. And I generally don't use any of their media products either. I've been using Quicktime Pro almost exclusively for a while now. Sometimes DIVx.

I really just couldn't believe ...

Well, don't want to keep sounding like some kind of info-mercial. You just gotta try it yourself and see the results. You can always Uninstall if you don't like it.

Have fun.

Hmmmm,

I think my CPU isn't fast enough, cause it's flat out & it was gonna take 4+ hours to encode a 13min film from DV footage :o ...compared to about 40mins in Windows Movie Maker :(

DAMN!!! sounded good too.

What's stopping you from doing it overnight? :D

Reminds me of a 13 second shot in Shosk that took 17 hours to render...

Ok to be fair I only had 48 megs of Ram and an old copy of 3D Studio when I did Shosk, and it was a shot which had several particles and high res textures! It wasn't even that great a shot either, it was just long.

I also did a long shot of CGI blood coming out of someones neck in a horrific shaving accident which took 7 hours to render and was nothing special (go to http://members.lycos.co.uk/ornsack - Films - Showreel and click on "Jach 3" to see it)
