Flaming River

Post by XhuntedoverlordX »

I want to have a scene in my upcoming movie where some of the characters throw oil in a river and then drop a lit match on it. I want to have the river light up on fire and catch a few people in it on fire. Does anyone know of a safe way to do this?

Experiment! Try burning things in a barrel of water, testing to see how easy they are to put out, if they work at all, etc... I'd try white gas, alcohol (isopropyl) cooking oil and whatever else you can think of. Should make for a very dramatic shot.

I would use miniatures but the problem is making it realistic. Plus I also wanted to show some people get caught on fire, i'm not sure how to do miniatures for that.

Greenscreen the people and overlap the fire over them. Would be hard to make it look good though.

Forced perspective combined with tight shots should yield decent results. A wide shot will be tricky, so it's probably best that you avoid it. If this is a flashback scene, you can get pretty creative with it.

Oh put the fire in front of the camera and film the person in the background. That might work if you play around with it a little.

Is there anyway I can do that in Adobe Premiere? Maybe overlay an image of fire over the actual film? If so does anyone know if it would look good?

The fire would have to be shot behind a bluescreen. You might want to do a close up shot, it would look a little better and be easier to do.

what exactly are you looking to do is it a war film? I have taken mortar bombs(AKA the fireworks dropped down into the tubes) and thrown them into the water and they look good just get a couple....otherwise for fire on the water I would find a friend or creek and dam it up. its best to find a friend. dam it up then get your stuff and light the helll out of it....burning people safely will be a challenge

Its actually a zombie movie. I know, there's way to many of them, but I love zombies. lol. Basically I want the heroes of the movie to pour various fuels in the river then light up the river to burn some zombies.

are the zombies just standing in the river????? if they are do a shot where you see them in the river// cut to heroes looking like they are pouring gas or liquids into the river and then get another shot of them walking away and have various amounts of gas on the banks of the river and light them on fire this explosion should convey to the audience zombies are getting burned...

I need to know better context of this river scene.

Experiment with some Fire stock footage at www.Detonationfilms.com, with the right angle and motion, you could pull it off.

hmm I'm looking to do a scene like this in my movie also. The best way I can think of doing it is just filming the scene without the fire and then adding it in with cg... but that'd look really fake unless your proficient with fire effects in cg... You could always cover your person in head to toe with aloevera and then do the scene for real... but make sure to have a ton of water buckets and ppl to put him out.
