CGI Software

Post by WeirdEars »

I've just watched Dr Who on BBC1 and I want to know what software they used to do the gas mask thing. I saw Confidential, but I couldn't see the title of the software. Can someone help me? It looks quite good for making CGI effects...

If you don't know what software they used, could you reccomend any other software? Not 3dsmax7, I've tried that, too tricky...

EDIT: Here's a screenshot from Confidential:

What is the software?

That's Alias Wavefront's Maya, It's very good for CGI but a little expensive for low budget purposes.

Yes. I believe all the higher end programs will adapt when you have the correct hardware and plug-in(s).

go to the website and download personal learning edition.
It's a free version of maya to help you decide if you want to buy the program, i leaves watermarks when rendering. But it'll help you learn

Learning Edition is what I have, but you can't use plug-ins with it.
The 'real' one is about $3,000 or something so you might have to save your nickels.

Maya is one of the industry leaders. I've only used the PLE, and only for a short time, but I liked it then. And if you look at a few galleries you'll see Maya is extremely powerful.

Certainly. I'm a 3ds Max bearer, myself. But Maya is good too.

what do you guys think of Lightwave. My brothers college uses it for 3d animation. Saw some how-to book for it, looked complicated.

Maya Unlimited is $6,000, thats the super nice one with dynamc fluid, cloth, and hair but with students discounts it actually comes down to about $370!!
check it: https://www.studica.com/products/produc ... ctid=13123

Also, this might interest you, Maya unlimited also comes with Maya Live, for incorperating live footage elements into you CG, or visa versa

Maya Live: http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/products-s ... Id=1300005

Maya complete doesn't have the dynamic fluid and such, but is alot cheaper

I personally like 3d studio max.

I think there are student pricings for every type of those programs. Except maybe not for SoftImage, that one I don't know about very well.
