new explosion idea

Post by filmshark »

i just figured out a way to set of an electricly charged explosion that can be used as a land mine if covered with flour

1. get paper caps (ones used in cap guns)

2. uncoil them

3. get a thin sewing needle

4. poke the needle threw the middle of each individual cap in the roll (should look like an accordian on the needle)

5. compact the accordian of caps with scotch tape so it is very little

6. wrap thick wire around both ends of the needle

7. take the other two ends

8. open the hood of your car

9. touch the ends of the stripped wire to your car battery

10. the caps make one big bang

if anyone has any ideas to elaborate on this or to make this into a squib please reply

p.s. : this works, i tried it

p.s.s.: i also posted this in special effects

i've tried this, but it doesn't work :(
ok, i only used 9V (using a transfo 203V~9V), but who cares...
when i hold a match to the "powder" sticking to the bottom, it creates a "puff"...

I don't think the effect will be grand enough for a landmine. Hookin it up to the car :) That reminds me of the old trick of filling a gerrycan 2/3rds full of petrol, screwing a sparkplug into the cap, sealing it then hooking one of your cars sparkplug leads from the engine onto it. Guy turns the ignition on, sparkplug sparks the vapors and POW :) Or so i am informed

If you lot want to mess aroud with spark plugs, you will need a coil to give the extra current to make the spark, otherwise you'll get nothing if you hjust hook it up to the battery! In fact, instead of a spark plug, you may as well have 2 wires close to each other.

Not quite that easy - if the gunpowder isn't compressed enough, it won't bang, it'll just burn!

yeah why would you bother inserting a cracker(causes an explosion) into a foil full of gun powder. The cracker itself would be more effective :)

Hmmmm, hopefully nothing rankz, but if the firecracker was big enough and anything did happen, my bet would be the can would explode and send hot sharp shrapnel flying through the air. Veeeeerrrrryyyy dangerous, wouldn't recommend it.

The caps will go off wwith a bang about equivalent to a 1" or 1.5" firecracker. The trick is to wrap several layers of tape around the accordian, and make sure it is as compressed as possible. Wrap the tape before you take the caps off the needle. I always preferred using a large "diaper Pin" to pierce the caps since it gives a wider flash hole, allowing it to hit all the powder quicker. After removing the accordian from the pin, place several layers of tap over the bottom, attach the fuse/ ignitor over the hole on the top, and then tape that up well. If it is compressed tightly enough it will go bang. Just be careful though to pierce the caps straight on and gently. If you scrape the needle across the cap it could go foo and could ignite the others on the roll, remember caps are imact, friction sensitive .

I made one and it was like a firecracker. I am making one right now to film and one of the caps went off in my hand. Be careful. I will have a movie of one going off soon for anyone who would care.

Edit- It just happened again, and 4 went off. I will just try something else.

The trick is slowly and straight in with the pin, a little scratch and you can detonate several of the caps....

It's in one of my posts above dude, the ignotor or fuse gets taed to the top cap directly over the hole created by the pin. It's not just wires though. You need to either use nichrome wire or very thin copper wire as the actual ignitor element. The wores just carry the current to the ignitor. If the wire is to thick it won't get hot enough to flash. Nichrome will flash at a lot lower current ( requiring a smaller battery ) than the copper will and is generally sold at hobby stores for use in model rocket ignitors. Model rocket ignitors, while a little more expensive than bare nichrome, are a very affordable way to get good reliable ignition. For instructions on creating the ignitors, see CamClubs post on the ignitor, and I believe Grant had posted a squib article that included instructions for the same type of resistance wire ignitor.
