It's not an actual explosion, but it gives the effect of one.

i decided that stock explosions suck after i realized that they look totally unrealistic. it is fine if you just want to have fun with film making but if you want to strive for a professional look then you stay away from stuff like that. either go for real recipes or don't use them at all.

Detonation Films' stock explosions look pretty realistic...

prove it, saying they look good means nothing. post a clip with a realistic look and i will never speak poorly upon stock explosions again. and by real i do mean that i actually believe the explosion was in the shot and not composited in.

Okay, if anybody actually looked at the link, it's not stock footage. It's a device that creates the effect of any explosion. The Thunderpipe FX1.

How? You're always complaining that you're not old enough to have get a job and so on and so forth. Anywho, how I would make one is by taking those "whistling" fireworks that make the irratating screeching noise. You pop a small hole in it to get all the orange powder out then wrap it up in duct or electrical tape and pound it with a hammer until the powder gets really soft. Light it and you have yourself a small explosion (stick it under some dirt so just the tip and the fuse sticks out).

The Thunderpipe looks so cool, but if you go to the site that actualy sells them it looks like it wouldn't be too hard to build, and a lot less than $249.

Mushiman used a bunch of fireworks all tied together, and that looked pretty cool.

I've tried that before, but they all went off at different times. One time I stuck about 3 M-150s together, one blew up, one just died (dud), and one SHOT off into the air and exploded, lol.

i use basically a film cannister design with blackpowder. Easy to make, easy to direct and little shrapnel. 10 years+ using them and 0 injuries

I was just wondering, if you're trying to be safe with explosions, why would you try and hire an idiot to do them for you? Just sounds a little unsafe is all.

I just saw the thunderpipefx thing and that was cool. It will be on my list of equipment for my next film. The fireball thing was cool, would probably need a pyro to do it legally, but it is still cheaper with that gadget than the normal way.

Do the 'throwing up dirt' thing and add stock? With a bit of testing, it might just work... Otherwise I just say check Detonation Films film diary, might help a bit.

detonation films has a "cremora blowpipe", i made it, its basically a tube with coffee creamer poured in the end, blow in one side and have the creamer ignite one a piece of coal and you can get a descent 5-6 foot explosion, good for getting the light on the actor and all, though you might want to have some debri and such, check it out on their website.

Oh yeah? Hollywood productions use stock footage ALL THE TIME. That's the reason it is called stock footage. Only the unexperienced will claim professionals do not use stock footage. Ironic, isn't it? :)
