it is completely legal to copy a copyrighted dvd if you own it and it is for backing up purposes right? or is that only with cd's?

I guess it would be OK to back it up. As long as you don't sell it, or do anything illegal with it. (And nobody knows that you copied a copyrighted DVD.)

In the UK copying a DVD or audio CD without the permission of the copyright holder is illegal. Whether you own the original or not makes no difference.
The US allows for 'fair use' backing up.
