Do editors receive a script with the raw footage, or are they on set during filming? How do they know which order to place things in and how it should be done, or are they just guessing

They have storyboards and a script to guide them.

And usualy the director is in the room, if he isn't the editor himself. And they have had legthy meeting with the director/writers producers, to get the feel for the picture, so that they know what is going on and what is wanted. It would be silly to give a guy a script and storyboards with your footage and say, put this toghter.

well then it is there louse if the movie doesn't turn out they way they want, and a large hassale to you, because you still have to peace it toghter with no knowage of what was going on onset.

they are also given a shot list that says, the shot times, scene, whether the shot was any good or whatever.
