Win 98, Your time is up!
Well, sometime in August apparently!
Microsoft will be pulling the plug on support on this and as far as I'm informed Win 2000 as well.
Download all the latest drivers, patches and updates you can to make sure your system is as up to date as it can be and if possible, back up copies of these drivers should you need to re-install them.
This usually implies that Microsoft are ready to roll out something new, which is probably its awaited 64-bit Operating system. I'm guessing that's the case seeing that 64-bit processors are getting quite popular suddenly even though they're not really supported properly!
I run a hybrid network of Xp and 98SE machines, so I'm partly affected by this, and can't get XP drivers for some of the hardware. Oh well, Just have to upgrade when something goes wrong next time.

Win 2k support will continue for some time. As will 98 support, so long as you are willing to pay LOL.. I just called MS for an NT4.0 server issue 2 weks ago... even tho 'support' for 4.0 was dropped about 18 months ago. Also Windows update still carries the updates for NT 4.0 and probably will for 98. The typical freebie support, direct website for the OS etc will go away. support.microsoft.com will still have trouble shooting articles available. The next release ofan MS client operating system - Longhorn - has been moved back.. again to late '05 and may move again to 1st Q '06.

I was able to DL the beta since we are a Microsft Certified Partner from Microsoft. I beleieve it was available to anyone who had an MSDN Developer subscription. The keys however were unique for each subscriber, so unlesss you got a good working key, and registered the product, it is only good for like 45 days ( I think it was 45 ...)

the news system they want is to enable the OS to be online only and a web booter. But in the mean time they are teaming up with INTEL, AMD and a heap of other IT companies to have integrated security in hardware & software which will detect pirate software etc and eliminate it. It will also enable any files created on pirate running systems not to work on the new protected ones at all. If it happens it will be very interesting

Sounds like the Longhorn bullsh*t version to me!
I somehow doubt that a 14 year old is a member of the Microsoft Developer Network! Raptor on the other hand, may very well be!

you can download it on every popular downloading protocol, including IRC (http://www.packetnews.com), torrent (http://www.suprnova.org) and newsgroups (http://www.binaries.nl). 100% legal because you can't do fudge nugget with them, the stupid thing isn't stable for more than 7 mins!!!
