budget computer: intel or amd?

Post by justsomeguy »

im building a budget computer (below $400) and originally i was planning on getting a 2.4 ghz p4 from newegg for about $150
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 139&depa=1
but i was wondering if i went with amd its supposed to be cheaper, so i looked for one around $100 and found a athlon xp 2700+ (by the way i have little experience with amd, and didnt like the little i did have) for $108 also from newegg
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 342&depa=0
i have no idea how these chips compare and was wondering what you all have to say. also if i do go with amd ill have to pay $10 more for a different mobo so im really only saving $40 with amd

Go for an AMD 64, great processors (never had a problem w/ mine) and they're all set for future 64-bit compatibility.

The 2700 should clock out around 2.3 or 2.4, but they have great performance. I've started upgrading with all AMD procs at work, both servers and classrooms, have two rooms full of 2800+ AMDs on Biostar Mobos ( ordered from www.tcwo.com ) and no problems. these machines run 24/7, screaming under XP pro, and have no problems running any apps. Also use one for the editing machine at work, run Premiere Pro/6.0 AE and DVD burner on tat box... Used to be a confirmed anti AMD person because of some bad experiences, but their newer chips have ben spot on!

GO with a Pentium 4, the FSB on that is 333 mhz or whatever it said, P4 is 533. + AMD's over heat if there clocked wrong, go with the pentium...
