Stunt Fall

Post by Andiman »

OK, here goes.

THE FALL

Buy yourself a huge crash mat, or just pile up a load of cushions and pillows (which is more dangerous, but your choice.)

If you are going to fall off a cliff, then find a small rock, and fall tummy first, feet first or back first (I prefer tummy first myself.)

GOOD TIP: Land on the mat.

THE CAMERA

Place the camera in the right or left corner of the rock facing upwards. This makes the rock seem even higher.

HAVE FUN!

Thanks for stating the obvious. I sure couldn't have figured that one out on my own...

Wasn't obvious to me, I was just about to jump off of a cliff.

OK stunt falling.

Practise break falling first at home.

Start off low and then work height up.

Do all sorts of falls ie frin, back side etc.

This is how it all starts.

Survey the area for dangers and hazards.

How is that for starters:D

how about not using a crash mat or learning break falls? how about just jumping off a bridge onto a moving truck full of hay? lol, that would make a good movie, and you could always hop off when it stops a mile down the road heh

Crash mat is just for your personal safety and is optional;)

Break falling is important though from all sides and heights etc. It does hurt to train and get the fall right though. Also depends on what you are falling and on how you want to land.

I would always reccomend using some sort of matt or such system.

You want to be able to make more movies after the stunt and have a certain quality of life:D Expecially if you are not being paid for it or are covered by insurance:o

You've probably seen this done, but cardboard boxes make a great impact buffer!

If you're actually going to jump off a balcony or a low bridge, make sure they're going to be placed where you're going to fall, with at least 2M of boxes surrounding the impact site all around!

They all need to be the same size, NOT taped up, but flaps folded to lock the box open, and use at least 2 layers of boxes, with un-assembled boxes between layers, and on the top! If you don't put a layer of flat boxes over the top, you'll go straight through!

One last thing, string them together so that the force of you falling on them, doesn't simply disperse the boxes!

Expect minor bruises where corners of boxes may get you!:o

In my school movie (operation kill eugene (my friend)), I had him get kicked off a 8 foot rock formation (he was hanging on, my friend kicked his fingers off), i did the angle trick, and panned down as he fell, worked pretty well

I one movie, I had to fall of the roof of a building, well it was my porch, but the idea should still work. Let us see them fall, or like a hand slip. Then make sure that their scream is really loud and gets softer, as they fall. Then hear the thump. I was able to get a two foot fall sound right doing this.

no, I mean the cliff was supposed to be 50 feet or so, but the formation we actually used was 8 ft.

They used to do that in the old original Star-Trek shows!

Clever use of camera angles can be greatly underestimated! The viewer doesn't need to see 1 shot, of a person falling 50ft, and splatting on the ground. Breaking it into 3 shots has just a good effect.

i once did this in a green screen test. get a fan to blow your hair/clothes (keep it off camera!) and wave your arms about and yell in front of the green screen. Next, go to a high cliff and zoom in fast to the bottom. in premiere use this as the background. blur it so only you are in focus and it looks more realistic. cutaway to you doing the landing part and add excess fake blood! done!

Why must people make things harder, green screan requires much work in post, angles require a little work in pre and then just need to be cut toghter. Film makers are louseing the art of angles.

Well here the in-movie event goes

Guy gets in battle with friend with paintball guns (gets shot 5 times, had mask on, tears it off from the pain and gets into a cussing fit[wasn't in script, we kept it to humiliate him]), is "bloodied" with red paintballs, and falls onto a cliff-edge. is hanging on, other friend kicks him off. does trick falling scene, he lands on feet and breaks legs. (smash a few on his legs) Friend comes and puts paiontball gun to uncovered face. Fade out, and have friend fire for sound, never actually hit him in this part for safety's sake.
