My PC is S-S-Stuttering

Post by El Brenty »

I have this problem previously, so I'm assuming it's the graphics card.

When I'm using CorelDRAW, the menu won't update for a few seconds, then it works fine.

When I play Half-life, as I'm walking of people are talking, I freeze up for about a second, or they stutter when they talk.

On Unreal, the motion gets a little jumpy. Even if I knock the resolution down to nearly nothing, it makes no difference. Beautiful smooth scrolling in between the intermittant stuttering though!

Anyone got any suggestions? I was going to upgrade the graphics card anyway and use the Matrox card to upgrade an older PC here.

I didn't get this problem when I first installed Windows XP, it seems to have developed since I added the TV capture card this time around!

It's a Matrox card, and apart from a previous time when it stuttered, it's been working fine. Has all the latest drivers. Started stuttering when I installed a capture card. Removed the capture card, still stuttering. I bumped up the memory frequency at about this time, could be a possible cause, although that's down to normal speed again now.

Strange one eh!

Yuo haven't got a system restore point for before installing the capture card have you? If so, restore it, and then try again, or not at all.

That's because if Apple started having third parties (Dell, Gateway, etc.) sell their products, Apple would go under. 85% of Apple's profit is hardware. And there are like 4 stores around where I live that fixes Apple computers.

Well I don't consider best buy to be exactly a computer service shop LOL... ask them what the certs of their techs are... If it's not at least COMPTIA A+, make the drive! System restore is not a bad thing. The system restore we see today is a descendant of NT 4.0's Last known good. Windows system restore is not designed to be a routine utility, it's design is to recover from a bad driver or hardware install, or a bugged software install. That it does very well. Sys restore can't multiply problems, if it appears to, it's because the problem already existed at the ponit in time the restore point was set. Now, with that being said, it is best to try to uninstall the offending driver, software or hardware manually BEFORE doing a system restore. Most times, after uninstalling the offending item, the error that stays behind is registry related. And sys restore is perfect for recovering the registry, since it contains a complete sopy of the registry at the time the restore point was created. The biggest problem I've seen with people using the system restore is sloppy housekeeping on the PC to begin with. For example you install some software, create a restore point, then uninstall that software, then restore without a new restore point... THAT will cause an error, since the restore has registry entriesfor the now missing program.

I tried to remove the capture card driver, also did a system restore to before it was originally installed, still get the problem. It's gotta be something up with the graphics card. It's improved slightly, but not gone away. I think the graphics processor chip could be overheating, I did have this problem before on a Win98 machine - same card.

If there is a heat sink on the GFX Proc, attach a small low profile fan to t he top of the sink, this should eliminate any overheating

I tried adding a fan onto the heatsink, I also removed all the additional PCI cards I had, tried the roll-back, uninstalled driver, reinstalled driver, even flushed the graphic card's bios with a BIOS utility, but the same problems happen! I think there's something up with the card, and I need to get a replacement! Sadly, the one I want costs about £350! AARGH! Just have to wait it out and see.

Make sure the fan leading out of the comp isn't clogged with years upon years of dust?

It just so happens that I'm watching pirates of silicon valley in school right now. I had a few problems when I had low memory (256 mb). Right now on my second monitor I am running a s*** video card that I got for free and it does not seem to be slowing my comp down.

Good news everyone!

It wasn't the graphics card! All of this was being caused by a virus that had got into my system! It's now been cleared out, and when I'm playing the aforementioned games, they're smoooooooth and fast! All the 2D accelleration works great now as well! The cause of the stuttering was the virus trying to jump to other programs.

When I tried the graphics card in a different computer, that also had the virus!

So, all I can conclude is if your PC ain't working properly, things are going a touch slow, do a scan for viruses. Fortunately, the virus I had was cleared out with a free stinger program! I got the virus from a supplier who in turn got it from Disneyland Paris!
