can't get new hard drive working

Post by pan-modo_pictures »

Ok, I just got a new maxtor 120 gig drive, that I want to use. I connected it with both the slave cables, and took out the little pin at the back. I turned on the computer and it recognized it and everything, but im not sure how to format it.

If anyone could give me some step by step help, it would be just great.

You may have to FDISK it first to make it available. You can do this by booting up from a Windows Startup Floppy Disk. After you set the active partition, you then need to format the drive. Make sure you don't formet the wrong one by mistake!

When I do this, I disconnect the master drive just in case. The system will boot up from the floppy. When you're done, switch off, and re-connect everything, you'll have an additional drive available. Look out for some programs that might suddenly not run - Some games for instance need to have a CD present, and adding the extra drive may throw out the drive letters. Simply uninstall and re-install the games if you can't change the drive letter over.

With WIN XP go to control panel -> admin tools -> computer management m right click the drive and you have all the FDisk functionality from there to delete or create a partition as well as format the partition... A new drive in an XP system will have to be partitioned from this interface before XP will recognize it...

Thanks for that Raptor, I'm still learning where to find everything in XP!
