LAN Cross-Networking 98/XP

Post by El Brenty »

Can anyone help?

I'm having trouble getting my XP system set up properly to talk to my WIN98 Peer-Peer network system! Internet connection works fine so far. Can't get it to find the colout laser that's a network printer either!

Someone?

I'll probably figure this out soon, but of anyone can save me some time, well, it's appreciated!

EDIT: Got the XP computer to read the 98 PCs, but not joy yet reading the XP from the 98s!

Got the printer working - Had to manually type in the IP address of the printer!

Man I can't believe this, it's like going back to WIN95! Not a happy bunny over XP's networking, especially that it's supposed to be based on NT's backbone!

Still, I'm pleased to have Pinball once again! It's been a while!

What protocol is running on the 98 network, and is it XP pro or XP home? If TCP IP are you using a router that acts as a dhcp server or are you using static addresses? If static verify the TCP settings on the xp box are on the same subnet as the 98 net...

I went for XP home in the end!

I have static IP addressing for my internet connection, and of course, the printer is static as well (Cuz that would be a laugh having to search and re-configure that every time you switch it on! LOL!)

Where do I find the subnet settings in XP?

OH, and another thing (backward step again perhaps?). I've had to rename all the workgroups on the system, because X doesn't like having an "&" in the name! AARGH!

EDIT:

Oops, forgot to mention, just standard WIN 98 Peer-to-peer TCP/IP protocol, microsoft file sharing, that kinda stuff!

EDIT2:

DOUBLE AARGH! I've had to rename one of the machines, because the XP machine was ignoring it because it had a space in it's name! Microsoft, if you are reading this (Doubtful), you lot didn't put much thought into the networking! 98 is far far far easier to set up on a hybrid network!

YAY! Thanks Raptor! At last! I've managed to bypass the wizards!

May I take this opportunity to publically thank you for the great help you've been, and that you contributed greatly to the selection of the hardware that's gone into this new PC! ;-)

EDIT:

All working hunky-dory now! Part of the problem was that I hadn't re-started the computer for new setting to take effect! Whoops! LOL! Now all the computers can see each other and they're all a happy family (Like us on this forum!)!

ANd then it runs sooooo sloooooowwwww... even a T-1 is 1.54 Mbits per second... the LAN connection is 100 Mbits prer second.... and not TOOO many of us have a T-1 into the house..... and you can always share files without having to be connected to the internet, and you don't have any sensitive data riding out across the ether..... also tough to share a printer that way too :) and you need two internet connections, or a router on a broadband connection.... and if you do the router then you have the LAN already set up....

LOL! Truggy, I have 6PCs, a network colour laser printer, and my ADSL modem in my company. It's not like I'm running some dual-PC system at home. Whenever you see me logged on here, I'm at work (I practically live there!). Tell me to go home! I'm too cheap to pay out for a second ADSL connection at home. By setting everything up on my LAN, I can share other printers, and even things like tape backup devices, and CD/DVD ROM drives.
