What do you guys do for a living? When you're not making films, and if you're still in school, what will you do when u graduate?
Because my parents seem to think that if I keep filmmaking, and dont go into computer programming (which, i did that once, couldn't manage what i wanted, and quit because it gave me too many headaches) I'm apparantly going to live in a dumpster (be poor)....
Thoughts?

Primarily - Network Engineer/ Director of IT for a private post secondary school... tho all my formal education was as a programmer Second job is as a stringer shooting primarily for local news stations, and The Weather Channel as well as doing industrial / commercial videos. There is a much better market across the board for tech people than production people... generally the money is better except for the top end senior people in production ( and let's face it, most of us will never get to that point ). Not to discourage anyone's dream, but when you come down to practical purposes, when a TV photo journalist ( read cameraman ) is starting in a mid market station at less than 20k per year That's not real encouraging. In reality there are probably as many production people trying to break into the movies as there are actors and actresses. The other thing is it's like anything else.. when it becomes your work it often quits being fun. Normally when we work on a production now, it's because we want to. When you are in the biz, you have deadlines, budgets, and a whole bunch of people to keep happy. If it's what you want to do, by all means gho for it. But have a fallback plan.

I just finished school, and well when i'm not film making i'm either programming games, or working my other jobs (Swimming Teacher, Drama Teacher, and i also work in a supermarket). Either that or hanging out with friends. At the moment I'm looking for work within the film industry. I highly suggest you also try to do something like that also. The pay is not all that bad, it is quite good, but it's actually getting the work that is hard. Unfortunately though there is not much work in film around me, but I'm gonna try.

I studied Software Engineering at University, and because of the crappy job prospects I got a job working for a balloon manufacturer! 13 years on, I now own a balloon distribution business supplying balloons to all the theme parks in the UK, and a chain of card shops, as well as balloon wholesalers.
During these years, I developed skills in pneumatics, and graphics design, which I still use on a regular basis.
I've always had an interest in photography (Member of the Royal Photographic Society), and this had movied more into filming (Home camcorder), and now with a friend's help will be producing a TV comedy sketch show!
I play the saxaphone and keyboard, and collect match boxes!
Need a girlfriend!
My advice would be to concentrate on the programming if that's what you'd also like to do, and use it to prop up the filming business until that does well enough to support itself. Sometimes you have to do things you don't like to get you through to new opportunities.

I haven't gotten payed for squat yet, but I'm working on that, I almost had a plan worked out with some friends, untill we found out it was illigal to make porno is Vrigina, so its back to square one.
Actualy, I'm useing newspaper writing as my back up, and as I see it, i can always send scripts to studios even if I never get to direct a big film in my life.

I definitely want to go into media. I also have a keyboard with all the trimmings, and would maybe like to compose for films/tv/stage if directing doesnt work. I am blessed with living 10 minutes away from the National TV & Film School, so I cant let the oppurtunity pass. I would like to work un-independant (dependant?) generally, working for other people, but maybe do an independant work as a side project to get my name heard.
