Jerry, am I right in believing that DVD RAM discs are in cartridges then? If so can they be used in normal DVD players?

Actually, *NOT* all DVD-RAM discs are in cartridges.

There are essentially three types of DVD-RAM discs:

1. The bare DVD-RAM discs;

2. The DVD-RAM discs that come in cartridges that can be removed;

3. The DVD-RAM discs that come in cartridges that can't be removed.

Panasonic and Hitachi market DVD-RAM camcorders that read/write mini *bare* DVD-RAM discs.

- Panasonic (DVD-RAM/DVD-R):

http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_elect ... orders.asp

- Hitachi (DVD-RAM/DVD-R):

http://www.hitachi.us/tv/browse/camcord ... ndex.shtml

I insert the bare mini DVD-RAM disc into my Panasonic SW-9571 computer disc drive as shown in the following photo:

You will note the Panasonic computer drive features a unique deep-dish tray that will accept cartridged DVD-RAM discs as shown in the following photo:

I like the cartridges because they really protect the disc from finger prints, dust, scratches, and other such "enemies."

My Toshiba D-R1 stand alone DVD player/recorder will record to either DVD-RAM discs in cartridges, bare DVD-RAM discs, DVD-RW discs, or DVD-R discs as shown in the following photo:

The Panasonic DVD player/recorders will also record to either bare or cartridged DVD-RAM discs:

Hitachi's professional-level news camera records to DVD-RAM discs in cartridges (and to DVD-R discs) as shown in the photo on the following Web site:

http://www.magnasys.com.au/Products/Hitachi/CRD10.html

If you visit the OptoDisc Web site on the following page...

http://www.optodisc.com/product.html

...and then click on the DVD-RAM CARTRIDGE link, you can read about the various types of DVD-RAM cartridges.
