I have created some DVDs with iDVD on my Mac, burned onto DVD-R media and played them without problems on players by Pioneer and Goodmans. It depends on the media you choose, there is a great explanation of all the different types here. The most compatible with set-top DVD players is probably DVD-R and Apple provide a handy list of compatible players here.

You gotta find a dvd writer with nice codec options.
A LOT of dvd player have trouble reading the DVD-RWs. If you can't get a RW to work, try using a DVD-R. That solved most of my problems.
Remember... DVD-R for movies. DVD+R for data.

Well I haven't had much troble with things reading my DVD's only the PS2 refused to read. I have a DVD player that won't read VCDs but it played the DVD just fine. And the X-box that didn't paly VCDs also played the DVD. We only have consols to play DVDs here at college because nobody brought with them a real DVD player.
Yes, I also own a dvd player and I was wondering, if I burnt a dvd from a movie renting store like blockbuster or something, would they be able to tell that I burnt it so that they can track me down and throw me into jail, or does it have a protector on it that makes it impossible for me to copy it? If you know please tell because I dont want to copy one and then having them know.

Let's not do that!
Just don't do something stupid that could land you in jail.
