A explosion effects test
I thought I would post one of the clips thats gonna be in my future demo reel. Did the work in 3D Studio Max using PFLOW and Afterburn then composited the ship and the explosion in After Effects. Turned out pretty good if I do say so myself

Oh my God that was awsome! It looked fake, but damn it still looked good. Just minus the flash. I love watching impact with that massive hulk of smoke. So amazing!

Thanks man. Yeah the ship textureing wasn't all that great to begin with. I got the ship from Scifi 3D and lighted it to the best of my ability. I was going to use a Boeing 747 but I declined to do that thinking I might get hate mail for an effects test lol.

Thanks man. Thats the beauty of Afterburn. Its such an awesome plugin and Particle Flow (PFLOW) is just really cool to work with.

Dang nice. Very impressive. The shadow seems off though, I think because it gives the impression that the explosion is really far away because of how slowly the smoke is moving. Speed that up to make it look closer and I think it'll make more sense. Softening the shadows might make it look a little more real and less cell shaded like they said. Very, very cool though. I want to learn how to do that.
plane looks good no changes there.... lets start with the effects
the trail of smoke following the plane looks horrible... use a gradient going from red to orange to dark grey to light grey and use it in the time for the particles. you want to create a firey trail behind the plane that fades into smoke. not whatever it was you made there.
the shadow looks off because it doesnt accurately portray the perspective and scale of the scene. the plane gets smaller as it travels away from camera why not the shadow?
the explosion looks okay but just needs to be toned down on the color and composited better. it should fade into the surroundings not be such high contrast on a relatively home video looking back plate. make those improovments and youll notice the difference

Muzzle Flashes, Bullet Time, Lightsabers, Buffy Vampire Effects, War Films.... Ahhhhh!

Yeah quite nice.... Plane could have been beter and so could the trailing fire/smoke. Do you know if you could find a real plane crash at same sort of distance clip. That would help you when creating the clip and editing and us (viewers) when comparing it to reality.
