Private Ryan CGI?

Post by crb »

I was watching Saving Private Ryan once a few nights ago. That scene when they get on the Normandy beach. There's this shot from the Nazi gunner postion shooting their machine guns down at the troops below. If you watch in slow motion, you see these streaks of light going by (bullets) every so often. I was trying to see if that was CGI or not. You'd have to watch to shot to know what i was talking about.

Sure do! I use it those programs all the time!

Basically, you can use any program where you can paint a straight line. I like Bitmap Paint the best. Then in Premiere you can add a little glow and it looks oh so pretty! :D

There really doesn't need to be a tutorial... you simply paint a line in Bitmap, then import it into the editing program, key out the background color, and place it where you want. Most times it looks great at it is. You can create a glow even in Bitmap by creating a second color around the main line, then fade the edges in keying.

Episilon, nice footage. That's is the most realistic footage of someone shooting a gun that I have scene. You did the streaks in bitmap paint, then that is what'll do. I have a shot where you see the bullets flying pass the camera and I needed that look.

Oh yea, can you send it if you don't mind, as a video file not as one of the 3d program files; that'd be great!

I also like the one on his site with the test shot of the soldier; if you don't mind could I get that too? As a quicktime file would be great.

Who... wha... huh? What's going on? lol

It's pretty simple. I created a red spray animation in Max, exported it and imported the avi into Premiere Pro, where I resized it to fit where I wanted, and color corrected it to match the footage. But it looks decent.

If I were doing this professionally, I would have done it different. I would track the camera in Max, then recreate the boundaries in 3d and apply shadowing over the ground. I could also use super spray particales to imitate fluid better and get an organic feeling to the impact. Maybe model some brain material, digitally input a hole into his head and the helmet maybe, details like that. It could be gruesome! :)

The whole point of those things were saying there's not a big deal over creating good cg blood. But the producers love to brag about it in Hollywood films!

My Exploding Man movie was a spoof off my favorite sticky bomb guy on Svaing Private Ryan. :D

Yea but I don't have a 3d program because I'm too lazy to get one, so I was hoping you could dig deep in your heart and give me some footage because I starting filming of this film project in middle March so I have time to play around with it (talk about a run-on sentence). And your exploding guy was cool; but more guts and stuff is need (specfic organs, not a bunch of red cr**, and other shades!).

Okay then... this is the exact spray animation I used for both of my headshot tests. Since everyone seems to want it. :)

Thanks, it was a big help; and for the blood splatter on the camera did you just have a picture of it then when it looks like the blood hits it it appears onscreen?

I was trying to figure out how Maj Barnes was filming in March, then I saw that he was from Florida. When I film in march its really cold. I was shooting last month in the snow, my fingers were going to freeze off and the camera doesn't work well in the cold.

Lol, it may not snow here, but since we're used to warm weather when it gets down in the sixty's we bundle up big time!
