HP Commercial, Crazy Effect

Post by Scott_Talbot »

have you guys seen that Hewlett Packard commercial where the guy is sitting in his office and he holds a paper frame in front of his face, and then when he moves the paper, the snap shot of his head at that moment stays in the frame. And then to make things more copmlicated, he picks up a piece of paper with his picutre on it and when he puts it up to his face it aligns perfectly, and then he hangs the paper frame around his neck. HOW DID THEY DO THIS??? ive been puzzling about this until my puzzler was shot...i cant think any more...

Quite simple with the right software. He held the frame up to his head. At a certain frame in the film, a 3D compositor took what was in the frame, turned it into a digital image and rotoscoped this image so it appeared in the frame. The same thing was done with the paper.

Time consuming, but an impressive effect.

Can't you just pause it when the guy's head is inside the frame and then export just that as a filmstrip, then in Photoshop go to that same frame and crop the image so it just shows his head in the frame and then export that as an image file. Back in After Effects import that image and at the exact point as the image file, motion track it over the frame so it "sticks" as he pulls it away. Or is that what you were talking about Mike?

I'd personally do it with a combination of 3D Studio Max, After Effects and Photoshop. Might do a test later, actually...

Ha ha there's hardly gonna be a program out there which creates this effect with the press of a few keys!

Something people don't understand about the effect industry

No need. Combustion or affter effects can do the whole thing.
