RE: Hp commercial
I've seen it. I'm not exactly sure about the specific technique, but my guess would be that the frame was held up toward the person's face, a freezeframe was captured, and that freezeframe was tracked to the frame as it was moved away.

RE: Hp commercial
If it's what I think your talking about, just clever tracking on the first frame of a clip. Probably took ages, but thats the only way I can think of

The HP commercial was made with Discreet's SMOKE 6. You're right. The actor just held up a frame, and they froze that frame. It was than cropped down to fit on the paper, and animated to move with it. There's a whole article about it in the Videographer Magazine.
Too bad SMOKE costs $64,000.

I posted a link above people, pay attention lol.
And here's a tutorial for anyone interested in doing it. It's for the program digital fusion, but Combustion or AE aren't really that different.

Yeah, it looks so intricate and cool. It had me thinking about it for a while wehn I first saw it. Then I realised I could probably do it without much effort in Max. When I get a little bit of free time, I would like to give it a shot. Smoke Would make it a lot easier, but accessory toys do have their prices...

Fact of the matter is that you don't NEED any of these fancy programs to do any of these special effects you see in commercials. It's just easier.
