Make your mind up, do you want us to recommend filters or films?

Whoa... there are many, many a lens filters out there. Do a quick search on Google, find a list of products offered, and see what you'd like. Some are easily home-makable, like smearing petroleum jelly on the lens to get a dreamy, color-washed effect. :)

I just bought a niftly little book on photography and has dozens of lens explained! :D Check out a library, learn somethings!

I wouldn't want to smear anything on my lens without a UV filter on!
Seriously, get one of those if you don't have one already, the best few quid you could spend for your XL1.
The XL1 has a built in ND filter, so you don't have to purchase one of those, i have a polarising lens too.

polarising lenses are very useful (especially when you want to give a scene a happy paradise look - like what they do on ads for tropical islands)

Yeah, it makes skys & sea bluer (reduces the glare). :)

No you can't. Real lenses that screw onto cameras/camcorders are between $30-$500 depending what you want. Maybe filters like transparent sheets of plastic that go into stage lights! :)

Good point, don't put anything directly on the camera's main lens! It's easier to replace a UV filter than the front of the camcorder if you should screw up!

not for 72mm lenses, maybe smaller ones. (but probably not, more advanced ones tend to cost more... my uv one was 25.00$)
