Fake Wall

Post by Lee »

Hi,
Just to see if any of you clever special FX guys could help me out here.
You see in my next project I will have a man being blown through a wall, and I want it to look real.
If anyone has any ideas on how I could achieve this could they please reply.

Thanks in Advance,
Lee

Build a wall.

Post by padawanNick »

The best way to do this is to actually build a quick wall, but not to standard building code.
In real buildings, there are supports behind the painted drywall you see. Usually spaced every 16 inches or so. Without these, the drywall is still very ridged, but will break fairly easily. Drywall sheets (or "sheetrock") also happens to be fairly cheap. :)

So....
Build a wooden frame with a good 4 foot open area between vertical supports.
Add a 4'x8' piece of drywall.
On the back, use a utility knift to outline a jagged hole. Don't cut all the way through to the other side, just get 50% of the way into the board.
Paint the other side.
Set up a landing cushion.
Jump through!

Looks just like a real wall, because, well, it IS a real wall. (just not as strong.)

Have fun!

I am with Nick on this one. Yeah build the wall. Maybe have the actor pushed through the wall by someone(s) else to add more of a forced effect. And yes think safety.

Yeah pictures would be great and remember have the actor forced through the wall just like the blast would have carried him.

Ohhhh!!

A big pain of sugar glass? More safety issues here. Need a glass type that will shatter like a windscreen (our cars must have them here) and will shatter easily. That will help prevent the danger of cuts.
Will have to think more:o

Ooh, today (and I swear oin my life I'm being serious) I was at the front of a lil' single decker bus, and suddenly this guy walked out of nowhere in front of the bus and his head goes right through the windscreen and he's sent flying... Believe me someone going through glass in real life is a lot more terrifying than in the films, the sound was horrible (well the whole event was).

When reality hits, it really hits.
The human body is a frail thing really.
Remember being at a Taekwondo tournament once and everyone was warming up. One guy was gently squating from side to side and "snap" he fell over screaming as his knee had collapsed!

Too bad they got Final Destination and Final Destination 2. Death is after all of them. Good Idea though.

"There's no fate but what we make for ourselves".

My mum made me memorise that for some reason, shortly before blowing up a computer factory. :D

We'll all die some day, I just hope I go in a really inventive or amusing way...

In fact Dan, my film making buddy, told me that if he ever dies in an amusing way then I should laugh at him for it, and if it's captured on film then we must play it at his funeral with comedy sound effects added to it.

In the country we laugh at each others misfortunes all the time. It is tradition in my social circle. I think it helps. I guy will fal over and rupture a vein, then you laugh and then help him up.

Terminator 3 will be a crime, different director, different writers, a female Terminator (when Hollywood run out of ideas, they bring in a woman)... It's heading for disaster!

Saying that, the fact it's the most expensive movie ever, and the fact that the trailer contains mass destruction, will mean I'll be straight down to the cinema as soon as it comes out!

Yeah i am a little dubious of it also. It better be good!!!! It has to be good. Then again big budget does not = good movie. I shot UDDS ARMAGEDDON on a $1000 budget and i think it is one of the finest action movies ever made!!!:o

:P Yeah budget doesn't really mean anything, but from what I've seen in the trailer, they seem to destroy a lot of building in all kinds of wonderful ways. In my eyes, that's what budgets were made for!

From what i have seen in the trailer the female aspect of the enemy looks interesting. Will she also use sex as a weapon at times? Also the threat factor would be lessened in some peoples minds as she is a girl (not my opinion).

But as i have said it is no UDDS ARMAGEDDON!!

Search on the net for tempered safety glass, see where you can get it. But you need to weaken it because tempered is 5 times stronger than normal glass. Also wear some inconspicuous safety gear, the sall shards can still cause minor cuts
