Dolly test shots

Post by Kentertainment »

Alright here are a few test shots from my dolly. It's only about a minute and do to lack o' track the shots don't go to long. Also in one clip the silencer to my airsoft gun is messed up because my brother doesn't know how to put it on.

Your face has a few bumps and wobbles! It takes time to get used to keeping it perfectly level and sexied up.

Yes I know its a bit bumpy. It took me a while to find a way to connect the tracks and it ended up working fine. So now I'm thinking of a way to absorb it from bumpin a little bit. If anyone has Ideas let me know.

Yeah, I have pushed this thing around, and it is actually not that bumpy when it is on carpet. It does not run as smooth outside, ( on cement) but other than that it is actually quite awesome.

Yeah it was a little bit bumpy, just a tip in general, when doing a slow moving dolly shot like that, unless your going for a comical approach it might have looked better possibly if the actor turned around slowly as well, otherwise once you get the hang of getting the bumps out, it should do great!

Yeah! That was actually his idea. He said I should make it seem all scary (well not "really" scary) and then he'd turn around and it'd be all happy. I was just like...................uh, okay. It really was only a thing I did to the result of bordom.

Ah, yes. Its amazing how much of a cinematic touch a dolly can put into a shot. Great work! :D

I'd have to say: If you have the time to build one do it! You can find whatever plans suit you best anywhere on the internet. I just found some and kinda altered them a little bit.

I just got this idea that I could make a dolly similar to that and then tie it to the back of my go cart and set a steady speed. Then I would mute the sound and keep the go-cart at a steady paste. :D

that would require a dolly with wheels, not one that rides on a track. Sitting in a car and driving alongside something is a nice fast and smooth way to film.

You should make a tutorial for one, it could get pretty popular on matthawkins.

I would but I don't have the time now with school and all. I built this during summer vacation just to give me something to do.

OKay an idea on making it less bumby: You know the type of insulation you wrap around ducts in houses and buildings for like central airconditiong. Its a foamy form of insulation. If you wraped the PVC track as it seemed to be a pvc piped track in the film. That should make it a lil less bumby, and high lub it up with some baby oil should help to the insulation will keep up enough friction so it doesn't slide too fast.

Also not all those shots required a dolly. I have gotten some better quality stuff by simply transforming the tripod into a stabbilizer. I have a small memorax 54 in tripod and if you close it up to be 20.5in and pull the pan head down to its aligned with the tripod and the camera will point straight horizontal with the tripod when you press the tripods rubber feet to your chest and make it parrallel to your body and hold the pan head from underneath and this should make it stabbilized. You move around smoothly with generous steps evenly distributed and u get a very stable somewhat dolly like shot that is not wobbly (with practice)

oh and also you should connect the PVC pipes with silicon sealant (like you owuld use to creat a tank out of plexi-glass. so that you can smooth it out and make sure the joints are not bumby,

I am going to make one soon, and I want it to be really stable, and I don't want to spend $$$$$, this is what I am going to use, some P.V.C. and a guide wheel for a boat trailor.
