Linux on a Mac?

Post by edinc90 »

Can it be done? Linux on a Mac? If so, is it just like installing Linux on a PC?

To install Linux, you would download the .iso files, burn them to a cd (or a floppy) and boot up your computer from the CD. Or you could partition your hard drive and install Linux in that sector and boot up as if it were another drive. The only question is: is it the same for a Mac?

Why not just stick with Mac OS, what version are you running?

heheh sure about that? why don't you just buy a pc with windows xp already installed? Will work much better, linux using windows programmes is REALLY slow, especially on (the less advanced) macs.

MAC OS X is built off a linux kernel, I don't know if there is a pure Linux version written for MAC, due the the different processor architecture.. try linux.org and see if there is even a set of MAC based binaries... There are PC emulators that will run under MAC OS. Lindows is a self contained Linux version, if you want to run Linodws you will have to find a Lindows version for MAC which again I'm not sure about. A quick look at Linspire's page ( new name) it runs on PC hardware, not Mac..

You can get windows for mac anyway, aswell as a program that can run windows programs.

www.linuxiso.com has some mac versions

Well about lindows dont get it the program was canceled and they never really got anywhere. My favorite distro is SuSE but if i try to run games on it using winex it gets really slow.

Also linux wont use directx so that rules out almost all fps, sure u can play like starcraft and such but its no worth it.

Thats why i made my redhat box my family server :)

Be sure to check www.yellowdoglinux.com. I believe they even offer downloads of linux compiled for the powerpc platform.
