i know what you mean, i was very disappointed with tim burton's version of planet of the apes.... but think of Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Mars Attacks and Batman, all of them unique calssics!! he is metioned by everyon because of those great movies and his ability as a great storyteller!

Yes also Burton's Big Fish was superb. I loved it. Another Burton Classic

What the hell ever happened to the rest of the planet of the apes remake. I saw it on tv the other day and it ended like there was going to be another part.

Well, I was specifically thinking of movies like Sinbad and the Eye Of The Tiger, and of course Fordidden Planet respectively!

These were technological marvels of their time!

Big Fish yes lacks the scary element but makes up for it in the story line and the great acting.

Hmmm, I'm thinking about going to the cinema on Friday, either it's going to be Big Fish, or Along Came Polly!

Why are u guys so infatuated with Robert Rodriguez, b/c he made his movie with like no money and made it a big hit. El mariachi sucks my left testical. that movie is so horrible. rodriguez did not accomplish anything in my oppinion accept making 3 horrible films. He just does basic directing, nothing complicated or inspiring. Speilberg, peter jackson and kevin smith are good directors- they are original and have new ideas to film things, peter jackson has some of the most amazing shots. the only good thing about lucas is that he invented star wars which was original and good films but no breathtaking cinematography or things of that sort. Now hitchcock is a good director and so is kurt wimmer (equilibrium, great film) and the wakowski brothers for their original idea. You people dont know what a director is, a director is some one who can capture the moment and tell the story very good just like sam mendes (american beauty, road to perditon). Alot people need to learn what film is all about. Not just special effects and cool props.

I also think that El Mariachi is extremely over-rated and boring

Granted it is overated!!!But boring?? I disagree. El MAriachi was a break through in indie filmmaking. It shows that with little money and a good script you can make millions and a career for yourself. Now lets stay on topic and not debate this, I will start another thread for Rodriguez Debate.

Me to, what he did with some of Sam Wannamaker's stuff was incredible! Okay, so they stuck prosthetic fins onto lizards to make dinosaurs, but it was gripping stuff, and actually convincing before we all got spoiled with the realism Jurassic Park pushed out at us.

i agree that el mariachi is not a film masterpiece, but what you've got to think of his budget while he made the movie, and from my point of view that is very inspiring..
I think you are very wrong if you say a movie like Once upon a time in mexico is a movie with only special effects and props (what about equilibrium and the matrix) the movie is a tribute the the old Spagetti Westerns and i thought that Robert Rodriguez really captured the Spanish charm... He may not be the greatest but he sure isnt bad!!
