Nice!
You would need to make a particle system of the object. Then you would have it replace the original object at the point in which you want it to shatter. From there, you can animate the particle system to simulate the flying fragements. Then you can apply gravity effects and stuff. I don't really want to go into detail, cause it is explained out in the tutorial and the manual. Take a look at either of them and your questions will be answered!

i didnt use particles at all.. my way was way simpler...
model your window then model it broken. if your good with modeling you will know how with boolean and etc.
next just use rigid body dynamics simulation to move the object through the glass... as soon as the object hits the glass substitute the first complete modeled window with the broken one and let the simulation continue and it will continue to simulate... if you used particles the geometry isnt there to interact with other pieces so it wouldnt look best.

I don't know about that... my method is pretty simple!
But yes, that way is much better physically. I was just going for the easiest way, assuming that the artist is not the best at modeling. Nice description too.

my clip turns you on? LOL should i start a paysite with XXX Glass Shatter on it?
Seriously if you want me to do it, i can do it without that much hassle and it was really quite simple... it was only a test for me to see if i could render different frame rates to get extreme slow mo in lightwave.
