The prop guns we used were mainly toy guns which fired plastic pellets. We had them as kids so when we started messing around with cameras we already had them in our toy boxes.
I have recently bought a couple of handguns from the online auctions but the quality varies. I'm sorry I can't be more useful and give you a website to buy them from. The pump action shotgun was actually a bright green water pistol. We spray painted it black and brown and it looked fairly good from a distance.

There is a company called Battleorders that sells fake ammunition. I've not ordered from them before but seen their goods in museum shops etc. Usually little packets of 9mm or 7.62mm ammo ...

I usually get my props and such from anywhere from garage sales to thrift stores to toy stores. A nice site to buy guns (not real, toys and airsoft) is:
www.411toys.com
They've got cheap toy cap guns, and more expensive airsoft guns. For the toys, just spray paint them, put putty in the logos and imprints and what have you, and you've got a nice prop gun.

When my dad used to make films as a kid (like father like son) to do gunshots they got a real rifle and shoved banger fireworks down the barrels, and when they went off it looked really amazing!
It sounds dangerous, as if the whole gun would blow up, but if guns were that weak then there's no way in hell they'd be able to fire bullets!

Yes Ornsack if using a real gun it would be safe. Just don't look down the barrel after the charge is lit. I have done the same with sparkly like crackers in gun toy gun barrels. They go off a little like an auto. Not always consistent though.
