lp or sp

Post by Darzeth »

Hey this is a weird question. Im curious if Lp is better then sp. As i recall from what ive read before about the camera the higher the frame right the less light can enter the camera cuase of how fast the shutter is going. On my camcorder 29.97 is the sp which records about 60 minutes on my dv tape. But my lp im not sure what the frame rate but it records 90 minutes. Would the lp let more light in and if so what are the real disavantages of lp.

LP means basically that the camera is recording somewhat slower in order to fit more data on the tape. It lowers the quality in order to fit it all on. SP is high quality with less recording time while LP is more recording time at a loss of quality.

If you want to have more recording time on your tapes, then go ahead. As far as miniDV goes, I have used LP numerous times. There isn't much loss, but I know there is some. It's kind of like SP=high quality wav file while LP=lower quality mp3 file. If you use mp3(aka LP) then you fit more on, but at a lower(somewhat) quality.

Go for LP if you're low on tapes at a shoot, but it won't let more light in or mess with your frame rates.

LP doesn't do anything about the frame rate, it's to do with the speed that data is written to a tape

I don't mind using LP for holiday videos etc but I try not to use it. Apart from an extra half hour of recording time, that's about the only pro vs a whole list of cons

Slower speed causes more drops on tape and its number increases if you record more then once on the same tape. Don't use it if you shoot something you care about.

Yeah, with digital there is no visible difference between SP and LP, but your data is a lot safer on a tape running on SP, safer from things like droupouts.

Another thing I find quite odd is that LP tapes have a harder time playing in cameras that aren't the one the footage was recorded on...

...or something

Yep, that's correct. Video shot on LP with an Canon will not play back on a Panny, vice versa, I've learned that the hard way.

If you must shoot LP, ensure that you can use the same camera to import footage.

As long as you shoot SP, the tape should play back fine in other cameras.
