Grindhouse look

Post by Kellockx »

Does anyone have a plugin for Adobe Premiere, an effect like they use in Death Proof, Planet Terror and the fake trailers ?

Thanks

Well considering they actually shot it on film and then took the film and actually scratched it I don't think you're going to get that exact vintage look. It looks as if they sort of desaturated it a very small bit and increased the warmer colors. You might want to put a little film grain with some sort of plug-in that simulates old footage and then adjust that so it doesn't look like early 1900's old.

If you're just looking to rough up the image like they did (to emulate the crappy short end filmstock they used back then), drop the saturation a bit, push the darks darker and the whites brighter to stretch that out and over/under expose it...then apply a film grain filter to a separate layer with relatively large grain and change the composite mode to multiply or overlay (so it picks up the color of the stuff underneath). The look they were going for was cheap film...because that's what was used in the original grindhouse indies.
Low/No budget cinema that looks like a million Bucks!

The best plugin I've seen for that kinda effect is 'Cinelook' for After Effects.

Sadly renders are more like those of a 3D package than a grading package, so long films could take weeks!

Nearly! Remember Rodriguez doesn't shoot on film any more ;) (although I imagine they scratched a film print version of the movie)

Robert Rodriguez said he screwed up his film digitally while Tarantino said he just kicked his film around and cr**.

If you want a decent free way to add at least the film scratches, download VirtualDub and this plugin: http://www.compression.ru/video/old_cin ... ex_en.html

21 different cinematographers work through this ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) workshop and explain just about everything they're doing. It's some sweet shiz!
**cough cough** sorry what was that?

Hehehe, as Dr. Lucien Sanchez once said, "Suck on that!" As for the book, it really is fabulous.
