Plus nobody seems to have a go at any of the other similar operating systems over the years. I'm pretty sure nobody argued about similar operating systems in the Atari ST/Amiga days (only power and games!).

Oh yes they did!

There was a continuous arguement between C64 and Spectrum owners- Mind you, this is a computer generation eariler than your example, so you probably wouldn't have realised it. I should know, I wrote several games reviews for Sinclair User magazine, under my alias of "Steve Brentwood" - My best one being Escape from the planet of the robot monsters!

ms-dos was originally called q-dos and was purchased for a couple hundred bux from a guy in a little computer shop.

"Apple copies Xerox"- that would make a good headline ;) Little late though.

well ive started using macs at school now for media. and now that ive used one i can officially say that its sh*t. i mean, its meant to be so simple but it's so god-damn wierd. now i know this is probably cos im so used to a PC, but you know, everyone says that as soon as you use a mac you instantly wanna get one and become part of the so-called "community". yeh, that didnt quite work for me.
and the video editing? its like motherfucking ulead for christ sake, nothing special about it. i still havnt figured out how to actually cut the video, now call me stupid or watever, but really thats just suporting my argument. cos everyone praises macs for being so simple and easy to use that any average joe could instantly be able to use it.
and we spent ages trying to import footage from a camera and by the end of the class we still hadnt been able to get it to recognise the camera. just heaps of little things about it that add up to one giant lump of suck.
and another thing, im not accusing this of particually apple computers, and it could quite simply be our retarded teacher, but he says you gotta turn the whole computer off THEN plug in the camera cos it could get a power surge and screw up the camera.... is that not the most retarded thing you've ever heard? ive always just plugged my camera straight in and ive never gottten any problems.
i realise now that if i continued i'd probably just end up in a huge rant about how media sucks at our school so im gonna stop now.

Yes it is. Look at it this way: you have been using a PC for a long time, which has tangled and contorted your mind into a PC way of thinking, like a ball of spaghetti. Now when you use a mac you need to untangle your mind.

Uh, yeah. Just a couple of things:

I prefer the the fact that Apple has a fixed menu bar at the top, opposed to one in each window. It's just easier, and less confusing. It also always tell you what programme you are running. YOur thing about the computer not recognising the camera, I don't think that's the Apple's fault...more like the editing programme (what were you using by the way?).

And also Apple obviously looks better and is just nicer, both on the outside and its software. Hell, if you really wanted to you could run Windows on a mac now. (He he).

Apple was hardly the innovator in the computer world. They copied just about everything. Read yer history! Nobody gives Xerox any credit these days...
Of course no one gives Xerox any credit. They have a bad name, what do you expect?

I completely disagree with all those comments, and even take offense that you consider my mind as untangled because I use PCs. You are the one who is being brainwashed by marketing!

I build my own computer systems, based on the specifications I require and the software I'm running - Something I can achieve with PC based systems, and not with Apples - Especially for the same budget - I won't pay for a branded product when my own custom systems can outperform them at a lower cost.

My problem with Apple, it that it limits your selection, it's too rigid. If anything needs untangling, it's Apple's attitude to ensuring that it's users only use it's own products wherever possible. The fact you can run Windows on Apples, is clearly because this has come out of a need.

I don't think they look any better, if anything, I find the white plastic look off-putting, and I would suggest this is a matter of personal taste. There are some very cool PCs out there, I suggest that you step out of the Apple store and actually look at what's available on the market.

At the end of the day, I use computers out of necessity, I'm unbiased to what I need to use, if it gets the job done quickly. Sadly Apple has continued to fall short of my expectations. Perhaps sometime in the future, that will change.

If you're looking for performance, check this out: http://www.go-l.com/desktops/machl38/features/index.htm Apple will never make something like this for years!

Ha ha! That reminds me of something my dad said. He's a complete technophobe and doesn't know anything about computers. We were in a computer shop recently and he said "Why are they still making computers white? It's so old fashioned for a computer!"

On a side note, where do you buy your computer bits?

Also PC world business - Which is a complete con, because by the time you pay the delivery charge from the business catalogue, you're matching the store price. Only advantage is that PC world business has a larger range than in store.

Zac - obviously iMovie is not a great editor for filmmakers usch as the ones on Matt's. It's a freebie, so what do you expect.

And CamClub - not all apples are white, but, just listen to this argument for white keyboards in particular: A black keyboard is very bad for your vision (if you can't touch type) and it is generally harder to see the different keys. White keyboards are much cleaner, nicer and hugely easier to use and look at. You can very easily and quickly see the different letters etc.

The Mac OS is so much simpler than Windows, its currently always on the cutting edge of technology (for the standard user) and its just so damned good compared to everything else out there (and I know what else is out there). But the thing that bugs me the most is how Microsoft blatantly copy Apple, that just really, really annoys. It would be great if both Microsoft and Apple could both inovate and therefore making each other create much better OS. Microsoft are not really competing in the innovation sector with Apple, which is sad. If Microsoft was also introducing great new features (note the NEW in there) it would push both companies more. I think Microsoft will start loosing users to Apples soon and as they do some of the two major problems with Apples for the normal user will go (no games and the price). As more people buy them Apple will be able to afford to lower the price and mroe games will be released on apple.

The future looks Apple at the moment.

I agree Dave! I use a black keyboard, doesn't bother my eyes one bit. (I actually have many different computers, and to be honest, I'm finding that I like the black ones better!) It's a stupid point that I certainly do not agree with, especially having worked as a health and safety consultant covering computer equipment (i.e. DSE and ULD regulations). I have never come across any regulation, guideline, article or reference even covering your point. I can only assume that this is simply your own opinion, which unfortunately for you bares no validity in the real world. As for white keyboards, well, firstly, I have a lot of sunshine in my office, so I could argue that it adds to the glare; as for them being cleaner - Not so, when you've had grubby hands from a dusty warehouse typing over them for a while! As for cleaner in a style context - white is so outdated! Silver and black are where it's at! Just look at all the top third party keyboards on the market.

Jpearson, I'm sorry to say it, but it's people like you that make us PC users hate macs more and more! The more you rant on about all of this, the more I'm pleased I don't have to use a mac, and have to justify my choice to everyone. You've made numerous points throughout this topic, many of which you've been proved you wrong through reputable sources. Therefore whatever concoctions you continue to dish out in your defence only serves to lower your credibility of your argument more and more. It's just a bloody computer! If they were so great, everyone would use them - That's my line of thought, I'm sticking with it, and the more you say, the more I'm happy with my choice.

If you're going to continue to entertain us with your opinions, try and get some credible ones that stand up to scrutiny.

I, too use computers with black keyboards at home.

At school in the art room we have 30 Macs - all with white keyboards....No wait, all the boards are grey and filthy, because Mac's keyboards pick up all the junk from the art room.

At any rate, as far as the best computer goes, its what YOU are happy with - and in that case, no personal opinions or raves can change that.

We love our PCs, you love your Mac. I prefer to agree to disagree in this matter - especially with my experiences regarding both.

Apple hardware is already priced competitively with **comparable** PCs...that means built-in 5.1 audio with digital output, firewire 400 and 800, USB2.0, SATA drives...etc.

Last June's WWDC convention brought EA games to the stage to announce side by side releases of every title from here forth with PC's (the intel move did this), others should follow suit to tap the market now that it's profitable to do so. A couple of other game vendors came to the stage too...including ID software whose John Carmack is a mac fan! ( http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/wwdc07/ )...the next version of OS X looks really cool too!

Black keyboards are terrible, which is why so many PC kids buy them ... um, never mind. BTW, on the black models of the mac laptops, the keyboard is lighted as it is with the white keyboard...and this board is white letters on black backgrounds...hmm...this site is getting sued for my optical needs ;)

And I quote what has been mentioned here already regarding the color scheme...

I don't know if you ever heard of this site, but the guy on there goes with the same black background and white font. Here's his explanation for it.

Quote:
Some webmasters have spent years tweaking their layout and designing their site, and very few get any traffic. This site, as shitty as it looks, gets over 1 million visits per month. I use large fonts also as a protest against all the stylish garbage you see out there. When I go to a web site, I WANT TO READ THE CONTENT. Trust me, thatmicro-font everyone uses isn't nearly as original as they think. I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision.

If anything, please keep the black background and white font, I don't feel like going blind anytime soon.
I love the white text on a black background (easy to read, etc)
Yes I think the colour pallette for the forum is fine. It is easy to read for all users.
As it is, white letters on black is much easier to read than little black letters on blinding white.

haha, too true, our media room is also in the art department only we only have about 15 macs. and theresa few that are just filthy yellow. im looking at my black keyboard right now and im not experiencing any seeing difficulty, that has to be one of the most ridiculous claims of an upside to having a mac.
if its white they just get dirty and end up looking like sh*t.
i had media today and i swear, every time i use a mac i get more and more pis*ed off at them. the inconveinence of everything. ugh.

You're probably trained to overthink the solutions to the problems you're having with it. Every PC person I've known has the same reaction to solutions I give them..."That's it?".

^Exactly what I was saying with the tangled mind thing, lol. And I watched this year's keynote from Steve Jobs and the next operating system is fantastic. The thing is I'd never trust a PC with all my precious files, pictures, videos etc.
