Script competition?

Post by rhys »

Hey,
I was wondering.... why don't we have a competition, we all start with the same short script, we film and then we show each other our work in about a week or two?
Who's interested?

I guess that would be kind of interesting, to have a sort of contest at matthawkins.

someone could make a script annually and filmmakers could work on it and post their opinions.

This will be totally sweet. But I think a script with a basic genre: action/thriller or drama.

i'd love to shoot the winning script... jk jk...

but that would be cool, have 2 competitions, one writing the script, then a seperate competition having to film your script... it may sway the voters to like a movie when the thought the script was wacked

but the main thing is it has to be SIMPLE. you cant go posting a script in which complex special fx, crazy stunts, and downright hard locations are involved and expect everyone to have a go at filming it, that will just scare people off.
which is why i think comedy would most likely be the least demanding genre for every one, cos with comedy its basically timing, and its just simple and easy and can happen anywhere.
and also probably a script that would only end up to be 1min at the most, that may sound ridiculous but it will have a much more appeal for people to film it, even a simple 1min short can take hours to film and end up having to edit it from up to 30min of footage.

short and simple.

yeah. make it so that the film is pulled off through acting and cinematography, not effects and eye candy. I want to see acting that is amazing, and shots that look great!

I don't think the movie should be a comedy, because comedy is done way too freelance and hard to write. We should just do what everyone would normally do, the point of the movie to see who pulls the script off the best. Everyone is always doing action, but lets make it so there can't be anymore then 3 gun shots, and any more then 2 people acting (some people don't have many people to act with them).

who gives a sh*t if its hard to write, someone else is gonna write it, remeber? and if its harder to pull off a good one than all the better, cos otherwise the competition would be way too close. comedy is largely on timing of shots, and actors too.
im not saying it has to be comedy, just that its not a bad idea and shouldn't be ruled out.

Just an idea...

What if we each make our own trailer for a fake movie? Like we agree on a general topic, then incorporate than into a 1:00 to 1:30 minute trailer.

We'd get loads of different tangents and directions going on - all from the same basic idea.

I like the trailer thing. In fact, I was going to suggest that exact same thing but you beat me to it.

i think it would only really work if we all used the same scripts, cos alot of people here are merely held back by lack of ideas.

Well what we should is have a script compation where everybody sends in a script (5-10 pages and maybe with a given promt or something like that) and then we vote on a winning script and thats the one we use for the film compition. So that we could have two winners. Of course the person who wins with a script probably shouldn't be alowed to win with a film as well because as the writer they probably have an unfair advatage. But who knows.
