My advice would be that if you have no clue how to do it, then don't bother :)

If you really want to bother, look in to 3d graphic packages like '3D Studio Max', or compositing programs like After Effects, baring in mind it could take you months to get to a level where you can produce semi-decent results. Also baring in mind you don't even know whether you're supposed to animate them or not, it looks like you're at square one.

Wikipedia is your friend! Look up animation, 3d graphics, special effects, etc.. In the meantime, use fishing wire and hang these objects in the air!

Remember, you can't get these results by just pushing a button ;)

what software do you currently have?

A good effect can be done with simple 3D software like Bryce - cheapest too!

for actual 3d animation, yes.

easy to learn, simple visual-based controls, and relatively professional results.

blender could be a good starter too... it's a b**ch to learn, but it gives professional results and is 100% free. anyways, for a spinning knife, you could get away with after effects by doing the scene from profile and composite the image of a knife in it and make it spin. (don't ask me how though, I don't use after effects)

Yeah.

If you don't have photoshop, then in after effects you could import a knife pic, use a mask to cut away the rest of the pic, then rotate it and move it around as you like.

But its 2D, so don't plan on the knife moving in 3 dimensions.

Just forward and backwards, up and down.
