teaser"The Hole" - 100% greenscreen

Post by santi »

Hi there,

I'm on final lap with my diploma film. I stuck in postproduction right now and I have only month to finish it. The film was shot 100% on green screen and it's political fiction/surrealistic/satire.

I guess none of non-polish viewers would understand all jokes but you can tell what do you think about technic.

Here are some stills, BTS photos and some sort of teaser (no sound) - just few shots to show the visual idea: http://www.sfx.com.pl/dziura/

Final version will available about 22 XII.

Hey mate,

looks like a HUGE task there you've taken on. Has green screen been giving you any troubles? The pics look interesting. I take it this isn't the kids class you shot a film with few months back lol. btw, did you make your screen?

hey,

No no... this is serious project :D This is something like to finish a college or something (not Master of Arts - I need two years more to achieve this). We have weird education system. I guess I'll be fired when someone at school watch this :/ It should be "universal" but put some jokes aimed current goverment :D

Well, I had problems with lighting and very small room. Some places were underlit or hidden in shadow. I need to reshoot some shots with fishnet and now I'm going to put a white background behind this (net is green also) and set the faste shutter. In this shot I throw a real fish into this net an it was too blured.

Some shots were easy to key and some need a lot of rotoscoping .

I have two 1,8m x 2m green clothes made by Pinnacle and some sheets of adhesive paper with EXACTLY the same color but I have not enough lights to lit the green screen properly.

This is going to be about 10 minutes long with huge explosion in the end. (Working title was "Born 11/9")

yeah i noticed the political references in a few of the images...i don't know what the situation in Poland is but if its anything like in Serbia (corrupt politicians, terrible economy etcc) then i understand where you're coming from.
don't forget to post the final work! Lookin forward to it

The problem is not quite like in Serbia: our last war ended 60 years ago and we have democracy for 17 years but politicians still have mentality like in comminism. Some of them use cross instead od red star but they thinking the same way. Our current goverment is right wing with sentenced criminal and former leader of neonazi youth organization as a vice-prime ministers. Is this a normal? :/

The main plot of this film is about human behavior in situation of threat (terrorism). I think it will be undertandable for people from other countries but I don't expect they are going to laugh. This is pure fiction and as you can see - even scenerey is transformed to be bit unreal. Even time is not precised. "Sometime after fall of communism". For non-Europeans it would be also: "Somewhere in Eastern Europe" :P

Now a little test: how many actors you can count on these stills and video?:)

I became a proud owner of former hardware magazine (about 100m2) where I'm going to build my own studio with bigger green screen :D

OK, let's try again. This time I use YouTube. Whole film is shot on greenscreen and all sceneries were built with still photos (a lot of stock photo) and exterior shots.

You can bet :? Some shots were made with simple change color, some shots with chroma keying and most of them with damn frame-by-frame animated masks.

OK folks.. here's second and last teaser of my film:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l4k6BV37Mc

Re-edited, with some shots changed and this kind of stuff...

After New Year (I hope) I will present the final version.

A small FAQ: fish were real (I ate them later), grenade was real (I removed the initor), all shots with actor were shot on green screen, there's only one actor...

Wow. That is really impressive. It actually looks interesting. And I didn't realize that was the same actor 'til you said it.

Bloody excellent work, I will definately check out the final version when you put 'er up. Will there be a subtitled version, or will I have to find one of my Polish friends to translate for me?

There will be subtitles (don't expect dubbing :P) - during editing some dialogs were cut away and I think it will be more universal.

That's cool, I think subtitles are way better anyways; dubbing detracts from the actors original performance. The amount of work you've clearly put into this is absolutely amazing, keep it up!

BTW: what do you call on institution that is gathered in case of crisis like natural disaster or terror threat? I mean special board of chief policemen, rescuers, or other officers responsible for planning, coordinating and managing everything during crisis.

whoa that green screen is really good. When i made a green screen it was that plain wallpaper that you paint with dulux green paint on it. when we pinned it to the picture rail we had to fix the seams with sellotape which caused light to reflect off it, thus appearing white on the camera; not green. Plus the cymbols kept reflecting the greenscreen.
The best way we came up with for overcoming the lighting problems was to have a light either mounted ontop of or directly above the camera.
This is the result of our first greenscreen test:
