anyway, i kinda like the cgi/robot ones, but theyd be really hard to animate.
those are very simple to animate. each front paw is attached to the opposite back paw, and those two paw assembly have their center at the same place; to make them swarm, all you have to do is make a loop animation of those paw systems rotating back and forth on one critter, and duplicate it as much as you like. once it is done, all you have to do is assinging a path to each critter. the two clawy appendages can be animated by simple two-bone armatures. to animate the saw and the small meat-grinder-ish thing, all you have to do is rotate them once on their x axis, and extrapolate the rotation, so they will rotate non-stop. ok, I agree. it seems complicated in the way I said it, but believe me, it'll be pretty simple.

not specifically "love them" just:
"they were pretty cool, better than i could do...."
"cool they look good."
they are CARDBOARD, i mean no offence to darrigaz but kids in kindergarten can do the same thing. im sure if you worked on it for a while u could make some pretty good looking ones, with gross fur like rhys said. but if u were really good at it i reckon 3d animation would be the way to go.

hey, I'm surprised not everybody here knows about blender! being a no budget movie community, sharewares and freewares should be an important subject, here!

btw, I strongly suggest getting the free yafray ray-tracing renderer. http://www.yafray.org/

for mock-ups like I did, it isn't very important, but when you'll integrate some cg in your movie, ray tracing really gives a photorealistic look. unfortunately, the rendering time is... ugh! I prefer not to think about it.

I'm sure you could chroma key the animation in. I've never tried integrating w/ video because I'm still learning Blender. :)

yup, use chroma key. I used walls and a floor with this model, but you can put a perfectly uniform background the color of your choice.
