1080i but that means you need a HD camera HD editing software HD television....
RE: 1080i or 720p
Well obviously 1080i is a higher number than 720, so more pixels!
It just depends if you intend to deinterlace the HD image.

getting a hvx200, I thought that the two resoloution sizes were the same because 720 was a single frame and 1080i is made up of odd and even layers. I do intend to deinterlace. i want to shoot everything in true progressive mode, right down to using 24p.

I'd go for deinterlaced HD. Vertical resolution will be about the same as standard progressive but you'll get more horizontal detail that'll probably make all the difference.

RE: 1080i or 720p
With the HVX, I'd shoot 720p, because since the camera can only resolve about 540 lines, there really is no reason to shoot at anything higher, it's just more redundant data.

Ya Dazman well first of all 'wow' if you have to ask that question are you really sure your ready to invest in such an expensive camera!
Remember with the HVX you'll need (so far as i know) the following to have any use of it,
about a few thousand dollar for a decent number of P2 cards, or a firestore (quite dodgy) or a mac laptop with final cut for unlimited recoding on HD (and a lot of inconvenience!)
As regards to resolution, the whole point of the hvx is the fact it records HD with progressive frame rates, the one thing that is hard to find if you can, for any HD camera under $6000
It might seem offtopic, but given you asking that question, i thought it worth pointing out! Likewise im also thinking of getting an HVX but at the moment those pressing concerns are making me think it might be better to get the DVX100b, then sell it in a year and get an HVX when (prices of P2 settle) and theres just a wee bit more compatability with editing software also.
