Profanity in Scripts

Post by Jdogg_Entertainment »

Hey I don't know if anyone cares but I wondering if you guys would be interested in posting the stats for your scripts on how much profanity is in them. I'm not on my home pc right but when I do I will post some stats.

The Enemy Within (WW2 movie)

10, which is amazing for 12 pages!

And my a movie brought to me by a friend (Letters Home) that we're both writing he told me no profane language but out of some 8 pages (we've just written the last scene and a minor battle) I've gotten in 3 (f**k, sh**, and go***mn).

This is how it looks for my current completed script.
44 pages long
6,191 words
75 profanity's
that's only about 1 percent
seeing that worry's me so I will go back through and add some more.

Most of my scripts have at least 4-5 curse words per page, that being said I have scripts that run from 35-40 pages (shorts) to feature scripts that run well over 130 pages. 3 of those horror shorts will be produced this year with Necroscopic Unlimited, (independant horror company out of Texas. I'll be acting and co-diireting in one for sure.)

I think its a fine line, a script I was working on for another company at last count had 1 swear word (f***) out of about 30 pages. the story told the moods of the characters and the actual scene that has it in it is the only word the character says at the time, but it was so effective as a shocker and the timing was perfect that the Director and Producer were determined to keep it in inspite of a few key rewrites byself and a fellow script writter that we had to fight to get rid of it (we lost"! lol). Like a lady friend of mine once said: "Its not how much you got its how you use it" which is strange because I never heard her swear once?

constantly swearing. actually, thats all the dialogue i write, the rest is just improv. i use swearing to show the emotions and let the actors fill in the story themselves on set. it makes it very effective when a non-swear word is used, because it lets people relax from their state of "are they really saying that?"

yes, we are. and we'll say it again.

If you focus on swearing in a script, you're probably a cr** writer. True story!

Honestly I just write Dave, not paying an attention to th amount of swearing involved, however my producer called me and was like theres alot of swearing in your scripts, thn we talked for a few hours and he realized wow people actually do talk lik that. No biggie, I just write based on how I hear alot of conversations.

There are many scripts out there that have lots of cursing and are great movies, I don't think they are cr** writers, infact they are good writers if they can make it all work.
these are the f word
Tigerland-276 times in 98-minute film.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - used 228 times
Pulp Fiction - is used 271 times.
The Blair Witch Project - 133 times.
Magnolia - used 190 times
Scarface - 218 times in all.
Snatch - is said 153 times.
Made - 274 times in the 90.5 minute film

I go with the scene and and the circumstances, I write mostly cold and dark stuff so the negative language meshes well.

I got a warning from admins on IMDB, for telling a few people to post their resumes if they sought to bash my friends there. You can see me say that on the board for Kenneth J Hall and Kevin Kangas.

I had to edit a little and abbreviate because IMDB admins will delete your post. But they got the hints. I just grow tired of 35 + year old a$$holes that never leave their mom's basement aside from attending Sci-Fi and Horror shows but feel they are film experts. I may have only an AA in film and not many credits but s*** I do what I love and even in th worse films I can find aspects I'm appreciative of.
